Improved linuxrc.s390 (third try)

I'm gzipping the patch and attaching it because the list manager keeps telling me that the size is too large. It is, but, well, that's how it came from IBM. If I don't hear anything from people after a few days, I will take it that people are ok with this patch going in to rawhide. It's basically just a big rewrite to linuxrc.s390. There is also a new helper script for linuxrc.s390 that scans for devices on the system. And a one line patch to mk-images to make sure the new helper script is installed. Here's the text of the commit message: INTRODUCTION After booting the installation environment on System z, there are no local storage devices such as a CD/DVD drive available to install RHEL from. Hence, only installation from network sources is possible, which requires an initial setup of a network device to reach such an installation source. Due to the possibly large number of hardware network devices (hundreds) and the way they are configured in the hardware setup, Linux does not automatically detect and allocate all available network devices. There is need for a dialog from which the user can choose a sensible device configuration. The least common multiple of console devices on System z is limited in functionality -- it only supports line mode. The initial network setup also provides the ability for users to login over the network from a curses capable text terminal, to provide an X window display, or to use VNC in order to continue installation. DOWNSIDES OF CURRENT LINUXRC.S390 The initial network setup was done with a simple error-prone dialog without any possibility for the user to correct wrong input. On getting stuck, the only option for the user was a reboot, which of course means that he had to manually enter values all over again. The user was asked various questions and had to know exactly what answers to provide for a successful network setup. Linuxrc.s390 provided no guidance or support to simplify the choice of correct answers for the user. Configuration happened after the user had answered all questions which could lead to situations where configuration failed due to an earlier incorrect answer the user was not informed about. User feedback has shown, that these downsides can be an obstacle for a successful installation of RHEL on System z. IMPROVEMENTS OF NEW LINUXRC.S390 - dialog allows the user to correct single answers - dialog allows to restart configuration, providing previous answers as default values - dialog provides a sub shell for problem determination - cut-down question text prevents frequent scrolling on line mode terminal - explaining help text is shown for each question on user demand - automated decision which questions the user has to answer - semi-automatic configuration of network devices by providing a selection list of possible hardware configurations - manual configuration remains possible as before - sensible default answers are provided where possible - superfluous questions (NETWORK, BROADCAST) have been removed - answers by the user are strictly checked for syntax and semantics - whenever possible, each answer is used to do a configuration step and provide timely feedback to the user in case of an error - user transparent support of System z device blacklist (cio_ignore) for short boot times on systems with many (thousands) devices - basic support for installation from FCP-attached CD/DVD drive (our version of linuxrc.s390 is based on rhel5.3-snap1-20081029) - basic support for installation over IPv6 (full functionality would require further support in loader) - prints answers in a format which can directly be used for parm/conf file (as a complement to /root/anaconda-ks.cfg) - may serve as a specification on how to configure network devices on System z outside of an installer, e.g. in init scripts or configuration tools such as system-config-network Otherwise, our version is fully compatible with the current version including the processing of parm/conf files. We made sure that existing parm/conf files from users are processed with the same outcome as previously. Also the interactive mode asks the user questions in the same order as before, so users do not have to adapt to a completely new structure of the initial network configuration. autostep and encrypted root password

If kickstarting a RHEL 5.y system, and the kickstart file contains autostep rootpw --iscrypted $1$..... then the kickstart will stop and ask for the root password. If using a plain text root password, it autosteps through the root password screen as expected. See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=471122#c4 for a patch for RHEL 5.3 Beta. [PATCH] Preserve existing network configuration files during install.

The suggestion for this patch came from OLPC (or someone with an @laptop.org email address). The user was doing a kickstart install and adding a local yum repo that provided an RPM of site-specific configuration files, including ifcfg-DEVICE files. This package would get installed just fine, but then anaconda drives over the configuration files after package installation. If we see any configuration file on the target system during installation, skip over it and don't write a new one. [PATCH] Fix case sensitivity when searching for headers

This is a patch making the search for the Location header on a 30X HTTP response case insensitive, rather then case sensitive. I couldn't find where the RFCs mandate the header should be capitalized, and sometimes it isn't. curl -v http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/ shows that the response header has a lowercase "location" header which results in anaconda giving a "got a redirect response but Location header is NULL" http://kanarip.fedorapeople.org/NULL-Location-header.png Verification with wget[1] confirms the lowercase header. anaconda status in rawhide

The latest version of anaconda in rawhide is (or will be with the next tree compose): anaconda-11.5.0.3-1 We were trying to get things to a mostly installable point for rawhide trees for the remainder of the year and the beginning of January. The anaconda team is on hiatus until Jan 5th, but I'm sure most of us will be checking email. Things to know about rawhide anaconda right now: 1) Networking does not automatically come up via DHCP right now. It will fail once, but when you retry, things will work and anaconda will continue. Working on tracking this down, but could not get to it by the end of today. 2) Deprecation warnings are present. We've been cleaning up code with the move to Python 2.6, but there are still some things with deprecation warnings. 3) GUI install mode may or may not be broken for you. It's hit or miss for me on my development systems at the moment. Some, it works fine, others it looks like complete garbage on the screen. If GUI mode fails for you, fall back to text mode if you just want to get something installed. I mention these things here hopefully to prevent hundreds of people from filing the same bug, #1 especially. Definitely feel free to file bugs, but be sure to check and see if someone else has already filed something for the same issue. If they have, add yourself to the CC list for that bug. Proposal: anaconda version number changes

I went to do a build today for rawhide and noticed that the version number in anaconda.spec on the master branch was behind the version on f10-branch. All of the people I've told in bugzilla that their bug will be fixed in anaconda-11.4.1.59-1 will probably be a bit confused. After fumbling around on IRC deciding what to increase it to, I thought I'd throw this message to the list for a discussion on changing the anaconda version numbering system. The w.x.y.z method now is a bit hard to follow and doesn't necessarily line up with our releases now. In IRC, there were some interesting suggestions. I'll try to explain them here: 1) [katzj] Use a major number for the version that matches the product release (so, 11 or 12 or Fedora, maybe x.y for RHEL--dunno) and use a git hash reference for the release number. So we might have an nvr that would look like: anaconda-12-[hashref] 2) [halfline] Use git-describe --tags to generate a minor version number that is the number of commits since the last tag. 3) [me, others?] Go with an x.y version number, leave release as it is so that releng can toy with that as necessary. After thinking about it for a bit, I would like to see our version number change to the following system: a) Use an x.y.z format (x=major, y=minor, z=patch) b) Tie the x value to the Fedora release number. c) Increment the y value for each build we make in Fedora. d) In Fedora, keep the z value at 0. For products like RHEL, the z value will be incremented rather than the y value for development on that branch. e) Leave the release number at 1 or at least not have it contain anything of importance to the version number. We should probably reserve this value for releng flexibility. I increased the rawhide version to 11.5.0.0 and we are now at 11.5.0.1 (bogus .mo file caused me to rebuild). Looking for comments on the proposal above. [PATCH] pykickstart, pungi: Allow ignoring of group metadata from repos

Right now, pungi automatically uses the comps.xml from any configured repository. If you want to do severe modifications to the default groups, you have to mirror all the packages yourself first, otherwise the group metadata from the base repo you're pulling from will end up overriding your changes. The attached patches: - pykickstart: add a new boolean option for ignoring group metadata in a 'repo' line - pungi: add code that sets the proper yum flag to ignore the group data if it's set for that repo Tested a s/F11/F10/ version of the patch on F10 w/F10 pungi.
