Ability to install to loopmounted filesystem - mentor wanted

Hello. I am trying to implement something like Wubi on Fedora. For this, I first need to make it possible to install to loopmounted filesystems through anaconda. I don't think a lot of modification to the existing source code is required. I tried going through the source code, but it seemed quite big to manage without some guidance. anaconda couldn't recognize the image file format of PNG!!

Hi,there: I download some source packages from centos 6.2 and rebuild them. The I use them build a install DVD iso image. it can boot up, but I encouter a fatal error: unable to read anaconda_header.png: Couldn't recognize the image file format for file "/usr/share/anaconda/pixmaps/anaconda.png". The anaconda_header.png is actually there and it can be opened by gthumb. The detail error message shows it may be the problem of gtk2. But I changed nothing of gtk2's SPEC file and the it build successfully. Version of information: gtk2-2.18.9-6.el6.x86_64.rpm anaconda-13.21.149-1.el6.x86_64.rpm. Any ideas? Thx in advance :-)

F18 RC2 btrfs options

I'm finding the current options and UI for the btrfs options to be non-discoverable, i.e. I don't know what they do. 1. Each option has a red (-0Gb) after it. 2. Redundancy (mirror) is presumably "-d raid1", unclear why it's checkable with one disk. 3. Optimized performance (stripe) is presumably "-d raid0", unclear why it's checkable with one disk. 4. The Technology pop-up menu is unclear which option it applies to, I'm guessing just mirroring and striping. A thin black line separating would make this more clear. Or drop the option entirely (honestly in a GUI I don't see the advantage of LVM or MD over btrfs integrated RAID, compared to the cluttering of the UI that results from providing the choice.) 5. Error detection (parity). Is this the metadata profile? If so, I think it being unchecked by default is confusing, because there isn't a -m none option. I'd even suggest the UI could be eliminated by making some reasonable choices for the user based on the first two options: Single disk, use metadata default of duplicated on that single disk. Multiple disk where -d raid0 or raid1, use -m raid1 because it's safer. Multiple disk where -d raid10, use -m raid10 6. Compression lacks an LZO option, and defaults to ZLIB. Chris Murphy

F18: will disk partitioning be fixed ?

The F18 anaconda partitioning is seriuosly flawed by following the Microsoft route of removing control from the users. Se bugzilla bugs 854105 and 855646 As an advanced user I still want to be able to install Fedora from the standard installation media and partition my disks exactly as I want them or reuse an existing disk layout without at any moment having doubts about it. This is requiring all available information about disks (e.g. model and serial number) as well as size, position and type of partitions. It is also requiring an easy way of creating partitions whether they are related to a mount point or not (swap). I am talking here about very basic functions, which should be available. It appears to me, that the current alpha release of the partitioning has been focusing too much on fancy icons. Will in F18 a version be included, which cannot be considered a lesser product than earlier versions ? - Jørgen Th.

Amount of RAM required for Anaconda

Hi, I prepared a simple clickable screenshot demo of anaconda for a local team meeting. It is based on the Alpha version of Fedora, so some strings and screens are old by now. Coding Style: exiting python programs

Hey all - here is a quick note about the various ways to exit python programs. Consider this a suggestion for a future CodingStyle / New Developer FAQ, or something. sys.exit(returncode) really just does: raise SystemExit(returncode) So we can use that rather than importing sys just for sys.exit(). Note that SystemExit is a subclass of Exception, so if you're handling Exception anywhere, you're going to catch SystemExit/sys.exit(). (This is another reason 'except Exception: ..." is a bad idea.) As pointed out elsewhere, if a thread catches SystemExit the thread will exit, but not the entire program. If you really want to exit immediately without dealing with exception handling or cleanup or threading, there's os._exit(). This should cause a threaded python program to exit even if called from a thread. Hope that helps someone, -w

It seems to believe that knowing where the partitions are is enough for it to DELETE the 1st MB of the disk to destroy the partition table. It then initializes the disklabel and then writes out the partitions in the exact same place,... WHY it thinks it's necessary to do all this russian roulette work rather than just work with the existing table structure baffles me, however, I didn't write it so I'm disavowing blame for once. There seems to be a gaping hole in anaconda where it just make no effort to remember what the disk label format was. This seems to be true of anaconda 18 as well, I didn't check whatever is in git, I kinda expect this to be a problem for PPC folk as well. changing self._labelType = kwargs.get("labelType", "*msdos*") to self._labelType = *platform.getPlatform(None)._disklabel_types[0]* alleviates the problem but is */not/* in any way a true fix but it will suffice for 80-90% of cases... What should have happened is that the original label type should have been noted and returned somehow.
