Howdy!
I was verifying a SAM bug (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=834012) and went ahead and registered my RHEL 5 x86 system against my organization. I then hopped to that client's GUI and started up SubMan (subscription-manager-gnome-0.98.16.3-1.el5_8) and clicked on the All Available Subscriptions tab. I then clicked the Update button (leaving the default value of 10/10/2012 in the "Show subscriptions active on" field) and saw the traceback that can be seen in the attached screenshot. Tom recommended I asked here to see if there's something already known for this or if I'm missing something.
