A few subtle theme changes

I have just turned on two relatively subtle changes in the default GTK+ theme that we use in F13 (and rawhide). - Mnemonics are only shown when they are relevant, to reduce visual clutter. I've written about this recently: http://blogs.fedoraproject.org/wp/mclasen/2010/03/24/mnemonics/ - Windows can be dragged by clicking on empty parts of menu bars. You can see these changes in rawhide now, and in F13 once gtk2-engines-2.19.0-2.fc13 moves into f13-updates. Matthias

spin kickstart/minimization cleanups

As you may or may not know I've been unhappy with how the Live image path has diverged from the automated install path (standalone anaconda + @gnome-desktop) for the desktop. Attached is a series of patches to both comps and spin-kickstarts which has a a high level goal of moving the two closer. Basically there are 3 fundamentally separate concepts which got intertwined: * Bits necessary for running a Live OS (turning off cron, etc) * Removing things we do want to fit into a CD * Removing "traditional Unix workstation" or other stuff that @base grew we don't want in @desktop regardless of space The comps patches come first, then the spin-kickstart patches. This isn't complete but I think it's a noticeable improvement. We still have more comps gardening to do. Note the spin-kickstart patches obsolete the second of the patch I sent earlier.

Hi, HP is rpoviding very good package with regular updates and maintenance. For the other producers of printers there must be some statistics with the developers what the users install (whether it is the hplip completed to the OS or something else). Regards __________________ P.S. Which is the latest compiled version of the kenel with debugging in f13 (currently my desktop is on 2.6.30-105-2.23). If it is something after this can you send the kernel to test it for compatibility with the apps.

Actually fedora-live-base.ks is unchanged, which is a bug. I'll refactor this so that the minimization of live-base.ks is also split off from the fundamentals of a live OS. I have no plans to affect other spins, ultimately.

Shotwell 0.5

Hey, I've just built shotwell 0.5 for F13, the build should show up in updates-testing in a bit. This is the release that has all the features that we wanted when we decided to make it the default photo app in the desktop spin: upload to various web services, printing, tagging, etc. It would be great if the photo-minded among us could give it some testing. Matthias

Hi Guys, The issue with the content of the CD is the least problem. In my view the web site of fedora is such a great mess (sorry to say it) that one should have two or three majors in IT (at least) to manage with this. Take a look at the website of HP for example - there is an online expert system guiding the user what to do and what not to do. Similar expert system could be made on the fedora website. The user will provide data about his profession, preferences, his computer platform, RAM, HD size, processor series, etc. and the onsite expert system may advise him what to do and how to do it. Movies with instructions could be uploaded as well (for further details about such movies see Ubuntgu at CNET TV). Installing automatically the Office from the CD and convincing the user to install the Office are not one and the same thing. At present all the Web is overloaded with redundant and often contradictory information and data and spam of any kind and with the years this problem will become even greater. It is not obligatory for a website of a famous Linux distro to give negative examples in that direction. It is just an opinion. Regards

upwards and onwards

F12 is almost done ! I think we have produced one of our best releases yet. Thanks to everybody who has helped making it a great desktop. As always, there are many exciting new things: Abrt, Bluetooth networking and sound, Dracut, Empathy, IPv6, Thusnelda, etc. But we have also put a lot of effort into making this work well and look sharp. And it shows ! There are certainly still bugs to be found and fixed, and we will spend some time after the release mostly focused on handling incoming bugs, probably until around the time that GNOME 2.28.2 is released (right before Christmas). Even so, there are some changes to the Desktop spin that I want to make early in the F13 cycle, and that I want to outline here: - Drop the CD size limitation and target a larger usb stick. We have discussed this in the past. The main motivation for this is that we have to fight every release cycle to make things fit on a CD, and we don't have room to include our default office suite or example content. - Include OpenOffice instead of abiword. OpenOffice is the premier open source office suite, and abiword is on the current live CD purely for size reasons. - Use shotwell as the default photo management app instead of gthumb. This may be a bit of a surprise for some. Shotwell is a relatively new application, that is in Fedora only since F12. I have mentioned it on this list before. The 0.3.0 release that has just come out is very close to the feature set that we'd ideally expect to have in a default photo management app. It also starts very fast. - Remove remaining Bluecurve icons from fedora-gnome-theme. This will probably leave some holes in the menus, and we'll need help from artists to fill those. - Include example content. We've wanted to do this for a long time, but CD size limitations have always prohibited it. Now we can do it, but of course, we still need to collect good material. If you have proposals for suitably licensed documents, movies, music, etc that are interesting, cool or just funny, let us know ! It might also be a good idea to include some promotional material that could be of use for Fedora ambassadors. If you have proposals in this direction, let us know as well ! Beyond these organizational changes to the live image, I think a focus of our feature work for F13 will be around software installation and updates.
