What about $CompVendor-$SerialNumber ? Serial numbers should be unique, and I thought they were accessible to the OS via the firmware.
The problem with that approach is that it won't work for a virtual machine, unless all of the virtual machine technologies started generating serial numbers for their virtual clients.
So we would need to have a fallback solution in that case no matter what. At that point, I'm not sure there's value in having a special case for physical hardware.
