Nobody in the systemd team is working on WLAN support. That doesn't mean though that other people might, and we'd certainly consider merging good patches if we get some. People have certainly asked for it, so I wouldn't be surprised if some of the embedded folks one day will provide us with a patch and we'd merge it.
If networkd is not good (yet?) for desktop, and timesyncd needs it for a functionality that is important for many people, then I guess timesyncd will need to learn to work with NetworkManager if you want to have it in Workstation (or convince people that DHCP-provided NTP servers are not something they want to support).
Well, it is news to me that chrony and NM area integrated regarding the DHCP bits. If they are I'd be curious about the interface they use.
