Currently, half our apps use nice symbolic icons in the app menu, while the other half use shrunken hicolor icons. This inconsistency is a poor user experience, and not something that should happen in a serious operating system. Progress is being tracked at [1] under the column 3.16 status, but it's clearly not going to be finished prior to the F22.
I don't think this change is ready for Fedora (or other distros -- the change should have been delayed until GNOME 3.18). We should wait until at least all the apps we install by default have symbolic icons before making this switch. Ideally [1] would be completed as well. I propose either:
a) Reverting the change to use symbolic icons for the app menu in a downstream patch. This would involve reverting upstream commit [2].
b) Integrating symbolic icons for those apps in downstream patches. This would be more work, but at least patches already exist (thanks Jakub!) for nearly all GNOME apps, even though a few have been rejected upstream. We would still need icons for devassistant and setroubleshoot, though.
As long as "those apps" is only a subset of available apps the inconsistency will remain. So while this would improve it it won't really "fix" it.

It doesn't look as good as F21 since the icons are shrunken (perhaps a gnome-shell developer could help with that?), but I propose we go with this for F22 unless upstream addresses this better.
Hi,
At the working group meeting today we agreed to attempt to upstream symbolic icons where possible, and apply downstream patches where need be. Here is a list of applications installed by default in F22 that are missing symbolic icons. I have BCCed a few maintainers. If you are on BCC you'll find one of your apps below: most likely you have a patch in from Jakub in Bugzilla that you have not applied, but perhaps you haven't released since applying the patch, or perhaps did not backport the change to the gnome-3-16 branch (please do so!). Another possibility is that we missed your release and just don't have it in Fedora yet. The symbolic icons are used in the app menu and so are necessary for your application to integrate properly with GNOME 3.16.
Boxes DevAssistant Disks (gnome-disk-utility) Document Viewer (evince) Empathy Firefox Font Viewer Image Viewer (eog) Install to Hard Drive (anaconda) LibreOffice Calc LibreOffice Draw LibreOffice Impress LibreOffice Writer Notes Passwords and Keys (seahorse) Shotwell Transmission Videos Weather Problem Reporting (abrt) Screen Reader (orca)
All of the GNOME apps above have patches in Bugzilla, so we will either push them upstream if maintainers are unresponsive or perhaps apply them downstream if need be. The following apps may be more problematic, because I am not sure whether or not symbolic icons exist for those applications:
DevAssistant Firefox Install to Hard Drive LibreOffice Calc LibreOffice Draw LibreOffice Impress LibreOffice Writer Problem Reporting (abrt) Shotwell
Jakub, have you by chance created icons for any of these apps?
For Firefox, we need to compose a nice request to < trademarks@mozilla.com> explaining that their color icon displays very poorly in our environment.

mhroncok said the DA guys are rolling a new release next week and would be happy to include a new icon, if Jakub or someone else can provide one.

As I mentioned, I'll send this email.
Correction: we are missing an icon for Boxes as well:

These now have symbolic icons in upstream git, awaiting a new 3.16 release:
Disks Document Viewer Empathy Notes Passwords and Keys Videos Screen Reader
The Font Viewer icon is in adwaita-icon-theme git. We need a 3.16 release there.
Weather had a symbolic icon release today, thanks Giovanni!

Shotwell: We delete the upstream icons, so I added the symbolic downstream, but the build is blocked on libgexiv2, which is broken; contacted the maintainer. See also https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=717326
