While I have been testing out the fedora 18 beta, i noticed a significant change in the behaviour of the search in the overview mode. A good example of this is if you search for either "browse" or "web" in F17, you will get firefox in the results. However, in f18, searching for "browse" or "web" does not show firefox at all.
I discovered this a few weeks ago, and filed bugs both against fedora[1] and upstream in gnome[2], and the gnome bug has some insight into what has changed. Previously, in f17, the gnome-shell search matched against the fields for Name, Command and Comment. However in Gnome 3.6 in f18, it no longer matches against the Comment field.
According to the response in the gnome bugzilla, the gnome-shell tool does now match against "keywords" that are specified in the desktop file, but it seems that not many desktop files have relevant keywords specified.
In short, there are a lot of search terms that people were able to use in f17 that will now be broken in f18, as the majority of desktop files do not have relevant keywords specified.
I'm not sure what the best plan is to fix this. The tagger app for fedora does have a lot of great keyword data already for packages, but it seems like a lot of work to update every package with keyword metadata when the old way worked, even though it was a bit crufty and matched "in"s and "on"s and other small words in the comment field.

I think we should fix this, as it really hurts the functionality. Put back the searching for comments for F18 and then open a Feature page to get a real fix for this in Fedora 19.
Searching for email brings back nothing? powerpoint?
This is another drop in usability.

The GNOME upstream has now begun updating the keywords in the desktop files for all the core gnome apps, and their progress can be viewed by this wikipage:
https://live.gnome.org/GnomeGoals/DesktopFileKeywords
However, will the changes that are currently being commited to gnome be available in f18? Also there are a lot of applications packaged in Fedora that are not core gnome apps. What is the best way to go about getting keywords added to these packages?

We could file a zillion bugzilla bugs via a script....

Is there enough time in the f18 release cycle to be able to get keywords in for even the applications included in the DVD? Or is it a better response to default back to the old behaviour, and get the keywords added for the next release?

I don't think that is very useful - it is really not about adding keywords to _all_ desktop files.
It is about adding keywords when there is a strong expectation that a search term _should_ match an application, but doesn't. As in the 'browser' vs firefox example.
That being said, I've just merged a patch in gnome-shell upstream that makes it match in GenericName in addition to Name. That will help for many prominent cases, such as browser/firefox, spreadsheet/oocalc. That will be in 3.6.2, which is due in two weeks.

Maybe not _opening_ bugs for every desktop file, but in theory most desktop entries should be reviewed to ensure there is no regressions. If a user could previously perform a sane search for something, and in f18, once they do that search it does not work any more, that is a regression, and not a good experience for the end user.

Is there any way to easily review or even view the search terms that a desktop file will match on in the gnome-shell search? Would this be a useful feature to request for alacarte?

cat /usr/share/applications/vinagre.desktop | grep -e "^Keywords=|^Name=|^GenericName=" | sed -e 's/^[^=]*=//' -e 's/;/\n/g' Remote Desktop Viewer VNC RDP SSH

I suggest starting a Fedora wikipage to track the effort to add the keywords to non-gnome applications. Have a table with a list of components, status, and links to bug reports upstream.
