I was wondering how easy would it be to do capture screen action to a movie file... What I want to do do is something similar to what Apple has done to show off their OSX where you can see some on-screen actions, like opening X or Y program, then switch tasks, etc, etc. I was wondering if there is a program for Linux (ok, for X) that would allow you to do exactly that, and then be able to transcode that into an .ogm file, for instance. If so what's that program and where do I get it??
I want to do a series of tutorials for my family, but instead of me being present at each computer, they could only open the file, see how a certain task is done and that's about it. You could say I want to do some Linux marketing too :-P

The above link has a few hits. I've used vnc2swf in the for demonstrations. There is also a vncrec utility available, but I'm not as familiar with this.

Thanks a TON, I will give these a try... Just one question (before I embark myself in this endeavor) Is it possible to use VNC locally? Thanks!!

You can run your server and client sessions on the same system. You might consider running the server as another user (not your current logged in desktop user) as you *may* encounter resource conflicts running multiple gnome-session's (or kdeinit).
Thanks, James Laska

Actually I was thinking on running this through the failsafe session with my "guest" user and login to my actual account in GNOME.

why not use vino to export the display?
i have tried myself to record some such movies but the quality is very poor compared with http://overholt.ca/wp/index.php?p=11
if someone assemble a short howto this can be a valuable resource for producing documentation.
PS: of course, a free tool for playing those movies would be wonderful (swfdec? i have not tested the playback with it yet)

just tested the Eclipse video with swfdec: is almost usable. this means only a gew visual glitches appear, but CPU and memory usage are *huge* compared with the proprietary Flash.

When it comes to VNC... I'm a total n00b! How can I start a GNOME session when I log in through vnc so I can record it? I hate to be such a noob, but I haven't seen anything that would allow me to launch any desktop upon server login (like vncserver :2 -name foo -depth 24 -geometry 1024x768) how can I specify a session? I've been through the documents, but haven't seen anything.
