kernel-2.6.7 build 499

Hello, I have my own build system that is completely written from scratch with the aim of finding build problems. I have been using the 437 kernel for quite a while and decided its time to start trying the 2.6.8 rc's. I tried to compile 499 and it errors out. I haven't found the exact problem, but I did notice that its trying to do something naughty: depmod: Can't open /lib/modules/2.4.20-31.9smp/modules.dep for writing Why would a rpm package build be trying to modify my running system? The build root is an entirely different path. Should this step be noop'ed or build-root appended to the path? Do you want this in bugzilla? FC3 + SATA RAID

Hello everybody! I'm waiting for a Fedora Release which supports my SATA RAID set. I'm wondering if FC3 is what i'm waiting for... I have the ASUS A7N8Deluxe with the Silicon Image Sil 3112A-Controller with and RAID 0/1-support in the _BIOS_. That means: I have a config tool in the BIOS and there i can merge my 2 SATA Disks to one big (striped RAID 0). After doing this, for the OS it looks as if i have one big, fast disk. With the drivers SiI supports for WinXP and RH9 ( http://12.24.47.40/display/2n/kb/article.asp?aid=10767 ) u can use this one big, fast virtual disk. You may ask why i don't want to use SW RAID. I have installed windowsXP (4 gaming) and want to use the free space after the XP partition 4 Linux. Therefore i have to use a Linux which can see the big virtual disk the BIOS displays, like with the driver from SiI. At the moment this is RH9, but RH9 is old... i want to use Fedora. Now i googled for hours and searched the fedora mailing list archives and can't find a webpage which informs me of the current state of the linux kernel driver and the support in fedora respectively the fedora installer anaconda. ==> Does such a webpage exist? / Where can i keep myselfe informed? ==> has anaconda integrated dmraid or raiddetect support in FC3? / When will Fedora support BIOS RAID arrays? sincerely, nico. -- NEU: WLAN-Router f�r 0,- EUR* - auch f�r DSL-Wechsler! PROPOSAL: Core size reduction "bug day"

As everyone probably knows a few days ago a suggestion was brought up that we start moving none essential stuff like KDE, XFce and a lot of the other duplication into Extras in order to reduce the size of Core. I'm hereby proposing we hold a bug day on IRC, Saturday the 31th to debate the possibility of such an action and which programs to move in that is the case. So far people have express a desire to move: KDE XFce Balsa Ethereal Xmms Eye of GNOME GNOME Office Expression of wondering was made over the following areas in terms of duplication: MTA (as I recall at least, list might be inaccurate) Remember moving software to Core does not mean eliminating choice, you are still free to use the Extra repo, it means strenghting the defaults. - David *there's ample time to shoot the messenger* Nielsen

IDEA: Shortening boot-time

Hi, I'll post my self intro message later, I've been not sleeping alnight thinking about a scheme to speed up desktop start-up times for Fedora, and want to get it out of my head before I loose parts of it. The basic idea is todo things the XP way and loads lotts of (cr)app(s) while the user is already seeing a GUI. For this we need a couple of basic changes: -remove starting of prefdm from inittab and make it a service -add a prefdm-early service, which as the name says starts early if possible (right after kudzu), and which avoids the prefdm service from starting by using the same subsys lock. -move starting some of slow things from rc.sysinit to a service, detect if they really needed early in rc.sysinit and then call/source the service script. -Introduce a desktop config flag somewhere in /etc/sysconfig, which: makes sysinitrc skip lotts of enterprise setup stuff -Introduce a desktop kernel as a counterwheight to the enterprise kernels which leaves out more advanced server stuff such as raid, devicemapper, advanced routing, etc. Now the dirty inner workings of my scheme: ------------------------------------------ Delay USB-init: -usb (including the sleep call, GRRR) is moved from rc.sysinit to a service, which starts before networking, but after prefdm-early. -in rc.sysinit, at the place where usb used to be, take for each line /etc/fstab which is not a comment, empty and doesnot contain noauto, if it begins with LABEL=, see if we have a partition with such a delay. if it begins with /dev/, see if we can open the device -check if we can open /dev/input/mous0 and /dev/input/keyboard0 -now if one of the LABELs or devices can't be openened, we probably have an USB attached disk, or HID device we need, so start USB now -on a normal desktop, all these checks should work without USB, so usb will be started later as part of the runlevel, again the subsyslock should avoid double starting. -ofcourse there needs to be a way to tell rc.sysinit to always load USB early Delay loading scsi modules and the long scsi chain scan: -on some systems, people have a scsi-card for say a scanner, or because the bought a cdrecorder in the days atapi was unreliable, so they have scsi but they don't have any disks attached! -make mkinitrd try to rmmod sd_mod, if this succeeds scsi is clearly not needed for disks, so don't put the scsi modules in the initrd -add a scsi-service which loads the modules when initrd hasn't done so already. -of course there needs to be a way to tell mkinitrd to always load the scsi modules. Services prefdm-pre-net and prefdm-post-net: -the pre-net prefdm checks if the user has choicen an authentication method which requires networking and checks /etc/fstab for netfilesystems on vital places like /usr, /home. If neither of these are there it starts the prefdm service. (netfs mounts like /archive or /lotsofmp3s really aren't all that interesting to get mounted instant IMHO) (the checking for netfs can be done in the loop in sysinitrc and then be reported to this script in someway) -the post-net script always starts prefdm, it is there for admins to remove in ntsysv if they want the old behaviour where prefdm starts last, maybe the prefdm-*-net scripts, could even go in a sperate RPM, which then can just be removed be people who think this is a bug instead of a feature. -the real prefdm service should thus get prio99, moving rc.local to prio 98 Well I'm sure this idea is full of holes, so shoot. But please this is not meant as an invitation to start a flamewar about how FC / linux startup time sucks, if you want to talk about that talk to the wall, ceiling or floor. FHS-2.3 -- /usr/share/xml

What is the future of FHS2.3 and fedora? I was just looking for guidance on where to install some DTDs for a package and found FHS-2.3 specifies a /usr/share/xml directory: /usr/share/xml contains architecture-independent files used by XML applications, such as ordinary catalogs (not the centralized ones, see /etc/sgml), DTDs, entities, or style sheets. FC2 uses /usr/share/sgml for some of this and other pieces are strewn in individual program directories under /usr/share. Even under FHS-2.2, these things are specified to live under the /usr/share/sgml hierarchy.... tuxracer & chromium move to Extras

Would anyone object to tuxracer and chromium moving to Extras in FC3? They really haven't changed much in a long time, and how USEFUL is it, how often is it used? They do not improve constantly like all the other software we ship. I think we should save the space in core, and instead make a nice web page with screenshots, and say "Use Extras and try these games." A "Fedora Gaming" website may be a fun and easy project for volunteers to do. tuxracer & chromium package owner than(a)redhat.com agrees with this idea. If someone is concerned about FC having at least one good test program for accelerated 3D video, we could possibly include something a lot more fun and new than tuxracer or chromium. Your thoughts? question on packaging and QA netiquette

Hi folks, I have a few questions about Fedora packaging netiquette. Just for the sake of discussion, lets assume the following circumstances: - you're a strictly part-time packager but nonetheless have put some effort into your few packages and are prepared to support them as best you can - you have a small audience (perhaps a few dozen users) - unfortunately, none of your users have the time or skill to do Fedora QA - you'd like to see your package(s) in a repository somewhere so that a convenient "yum install $PACKAGE" works for the new (and often least-skilled) users but you're thinking it may take a long time--or perhaps never happen... So what can you do attract QA attention and maybe get approved? Is it considered "poor form" to ask others to QA your package(s) in return for doing QA on theirs? Backing up a bit, is it even reasonable to try to get your package(s) included in the first place? When is it or isn't it a good idea to try for inclusion?
