i686 build of Fedora Core

Fedora Core is an excellent distro, it is complete, easy and features a lot of packages. I think that the only thing it misses is to release an i686 optimized version (just like i386 and amd64). Packages compiled with that optimization would be a lot faster, and i think that 99% of fedora users run a i686-compatible processor: - Intel sold starting from 1995: Pentium Pro, Pentium 2, Pentium 3, Pentium 4 - All AMDs The i686 is really more powerful, it is pipelined, it features hardcoded floating point (FPU), it can process more than 1 instruction per cycle.. but all this features are all wasted if it isn't compiled to use them. GCC can take advantage of all the new instruction provided with i686 really well, the builds will be identical to the i386 one and you can provide both archs in two different folders. Just one question, why not ? Anyway Fedora is the best distro I know. Regards, Angelo

Xapian packages

I've built some initial packages of Xapian and Omega (the package is xapian-omega as the games folks already have an omege package) and stuck them on http://www.linux.org.uk/~alan/SRPMS. Xapian (http://www.xapian.org) looks to me a good replacement for htdig that scales a lot better and can do more stuff. I'm not proposing anyone changes to it for FC3 but wondering what people think longer term

Anybody know where bash 3 has gone.

The source doesn't appear to be in the gnu site, which of course breaks the link to it http://directory.fsf.org/bash.html http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bash/ No bash 3.0. Was it removed for a reason, I was just trying to download the code to check the changelog to what else is in there.

Latest pam/selinux-policy-strict broken?

Login, su, gdm is hanging on my system since I upgraded to pam-0.77-52 and selinux-policy-strict-1.15.8-3. It looks like the hang is occuring when the pam_unix module is executed as an account module. Su/pam_unix executes unix_chkpwd, sets up a pipe and then reads from it. It seems that unix_chkpwd is failing to execute properly and su is hanging while it tries to read from the pipe. After a quick look at the code, I'm not convinced that pam_unix tests the exit value of unix_chkpwd properly. modern VoIP client

The VoIP client traditionally included with Fedora is GnomeMeeting. It's a fine application and it works pretty well. However, it is based on H.323, which is the old VoIP protocol that's being less used these days. There's a trend nowadays to start new VoIP deployments using SIP instead of H.323, or even, in some cases, migrating existing implementations to SIP. Modern VoIP PBX implementations, proprietary or open source, tend to support SIP out of the box, with H.323 often as an afterthought. See Asterix. It is probably worth keeping GnomeMeeting around, since it proved itself as a reliable tool, but perhaps it is time to keep up with the evolution of the technology and offer a SIP client with Fedora. Device Setup Packages

Hi: Wouldn't it be nice to somehow encapsulate all of the Device Setup HOWTOs on the Internet into some repository of packages that configures the machine for its particular installed devices? The first area of need would be for laptops using a common package format that brought in the necessary drivers and edited /etc/modprobe.conf for the user. In light of this, it would also be nice if there was a /etc/modprobe.d directory so that these types of packages can add/remove configurations for network, usb, irda, thinkpad drivers, sound, ppp, etc. etc. Maybe the user could run a kudzu-like command that would then make package recommendations? It would be a big effort, but I think a lot of people would benefit from this stupification step. What do you think? take care, -- -jeff
