kickstart NFS install freezing

I am doing some tests on a kickstart install of RHEL4 and discovered a problem with my NFS server, after a large amount of data being transferred it will lock up the ethernet interface and refuse to talk to the NFS client until the interface has been deconfigured with "ifconfig down" and then configured again. When this problem occurs it stops the install (as expected), but it also stops the mouse cursor from moving. This seems to be a bug to me, the X server should not be accessing files on the NFS server (as far as I am aware) and therefore there is no good cause for the mouse cursor to stop. Once the NFS server starts responding again the install proceeds and the mouse cursor responds. I don't understand why system-config-network is creating new profiles using hard links. AFAICT, this is totally broken on my FC3 system. Every time I try to change an existing wireless profile, it seems to change them all. Guess why? They are all hard linked together. Update website to mention CVS, Extras?

Is there any reason why the main Fedora website still doesn't contain any links or hints that the public CVS server exists or that Fedora Extras exists? No mention on the front page, no "CVS Server" on the left sidebar except when you're actually on the CVS Server page, and plenty of references like on http://fedora.redhat.com/participate/ , which suggests contributing to fedora.us, "the older Fedora Linux project with which the Fedora Project will be merging," and promises that the public CVS server (which already exists) "is intended to be available real soon now." There's no mention on any of the Download pages about Fedora Extras, either, though users may figure out to look at that "extras" directory when they click on the "Download Server" button. Is there rhyme or reason behind having Fedora Extras and the CVS server nearly impossible to find from the main site for a new user? Or have things merely just not been updated yet? John Thacker

Strange 100% CPU state after 2005022[3|4] updates

Every now and again my CPU goes into a 100% usage state after recent rawhide updates (last two days). IN one case I couldn't figure out what was causing it and had to shutdown anyway, so just turned the system off. In another, I tried killing gnome-vfs-daemon, gnome-settings-daemon, nautilus, gamin and finally stopped it killing gnome-panel. in both cases I don't know what triggered it, but the usage was roughly 30-40% user, 60-70% system. Just now I've discovered I can trigger a similar state as follows: 1. Open Applications > Accessories > Dictionary 2. Type Role into the Word field and hit enter 3. Click on the hyperlink Roll (this should bring up the meaning of Roll) Doing this sends my CPU 100% (about 30% user and 70% system) Closing the Dictionary fixes this immediately. Is anyone else seeing this (I'll file a bug report if so, or if someone tells me) and has anyone got any ideas why? Rodd

Proposal for CD count in FC4

Here is my proposal: Given that x86_64 platform will remain at 5CDs unless we do something drastic, and that FC5 is targeted to have the ability to install from other repos during anaconda install, we allow FC4 to ship with a 5CD count for both (all) archs. Then we target FC5 to move some packages to Extras, and some packages to an online RH controlled repo much like the RHEL extras. Its still RH maintained, but not shipped on the CD iso sets. This would allow us to drop down to 2CDs or so in size for the shippable media, but still allow installing to the full package set. A side goal would be to ease the process to create installs sets from a given package list. This would allow people that have done one install using various repos to create a CD set from those packages and redistribute. Yes I know this brings up the problem that the CDs themselves do not represent the entire Fedora Core product, something that RH has been against for a long time (notice the lack of Magazine versions of Red Hat Linux and FC), but given the emergence of Fedora Extras, I think this has become less of an issue. GFS inside Xen

This may sound like a very strange thing to do, but it may be useful in situations where you have only one physical machine and want to play with GFS based clusters. So the real question is, did anyone try this (with current development branch) and if yes, was there some kind of "magic" setup involved or did it just work? Other ways to cut FC4 down from 15 CDs to 14?

Has anyone looked at the possibility of having a shared CD or two between the x86_64 and i386 installs? There's 412300KiB of noarch packages which are present in both x86_64 and i386, and 436108KiB of i[36]86 packages in the x86_64 tree. If a package ordering can be found which allows a bunch of those to go onto a CD which is shared between x86_64 and i386 installations, we get to lose a CD out of the set without running around like headless chickens trying to excise useful packages to make the i386 tree smaller. -- dwmw2

Fedora Core 4 Test 1 Status - Slip

Looking at the overlap of the FC4 schedule with the GCC 4.0 schedule, it appears that shipping GCC 4.0 in FC4 has become viable. In order to avoid a large duplication of bandwidth by rebuilding with GCC 4.0 between test releases, Fedora Core 4 Test 1 has now slipped two weeks to allow for integration of a GCC 4.0 snapshot, and rebuilds against it. Fedora Core 4 Test 1 is now scheduled for March 14; the schedule at http://fedora.redhat.com/participate/schedule/ will be updated shortly. Quick FAQs: - Is GCC 4.0 released yet? No. It's likely to be released around mid-April. - Does that mean Fedora Core 4 will ship with a pre-release compiler? We're not *that* crazy. If GCC 4.0 is delayed, we will either revert, or slip. - What's so cool about GCC 4.0? nash, cpio and linuxrc

Hello, First of all, please direct me to an other mailing list if I'm going off topic. I've investigated a bit the initrd system and there are some questions I could no find answers for: - why are regular desktop distributions always using the initrd system? I understand that this system is mandatory to load exotic scsi drivers or add a pause when booting to usb but I wonder why it is always used - on kernel 2.4 (red hat 9) the initrd image is an ext2 filesystems. It contains a linuxrc nash script. On kernel 2.6 (fedora 3) the initrd is a cpio archive and does not contains a linuxrc script. Could someone briefly explain me why these differences? Particularly I wondering about 3 things: 1) I tried to repack my custom initrd ext2 filesystem into a cpio archive and found that when packed as a cpio archive it's not executing my linuxrc script (is it the way it's supposed to be?) 2) What are the differences between pivot_root and switch_root (new in 2.6) ? 3) Why using nash in the first place? Could we just wait until the end of the linuxrc script? At that time the kernel would move to the new root fs (whitout the need for pivot_root or switch_root) And finally, if I'm right the end of the nash script (after switch_root) is never executed? udev + usb2 kernel race?

Hi, We have a computer acting as a server that locks hard (PS2 keyboard stops responding, prompt never returns, boot gets no further) when USB2 is enabled on FC3 (there were no lockups with FC1). I finally traced this down to being some sort of interaction between udev and USB2. The following steps reproduce the problem: Boot the kernel with init=/bin/sh mount -n -t proc /proc /proc mount -n -t sysfs /sys /sys /sbin/start_udev /sbin/modprobe uhci-hcd The machine will hang and not get any further nor will it respond to a ctrl-alt-del or sysrq commands. modprobing uhci-hcd before starting udev causes the problem to disappear as does disabling USB2 (but leaving USB1 on) in the BIOS. Kernels tested are kernel-2.6.9-1.667 and kernel-2.6.10-1.766_FC3. lspci prints the following USB controller: 00:07.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc.
