It's because they consider :
- the conf file is none of the user business
- as a result little thought went in key naming
- and even worse the keys themselves are not stable from release to
release
How is elektra going to help with this ?
It should be obvious having read http://www.libelektra.org. Anyways with a hierarchical key/value system like Elektra the solution is simple.
bzzt. hierarchical was already available when gconf was written (either by using XML of java-like hierarchical properties)
That is was not used is not a conf lib problem
