To change the subject entirely, doesn't grip support OGG and FLAC?
For the person who wants to "rip, mix and burn", OGG is better than MP3. Interoperability with Windows is good, the main trouble is listening to streaming audio on the web and downloading to many mp3 players.
A win:win answer might be to build a grip that supports only ogg and flac? Is that hard?
