Depends on how you see it; xmms is nice, small, and might not be pretty, but it works. RythmBox is big and slow to use with very large collections of files, but it is pretty.
I for example would not be happy to loose Grip and xmms, but then again, I might be old fasion:-)

For a Gtk2 replacement of xmms, take a look at Beep Media Player:
mp3 subpackage could be created if it's decided that it replaces xmms, or is included in Extras. It even uses the Bluecurve xmms skin :-)
Unfortunately it does not have "double size" feature of xmms. This makes it problematic for around 100dpi screens (1600x1200@20" or 1280x1024@17") My case exactly :(
