While updating to the current rawhide I'm getting lots of errors (scriptlets failing) running:
sudo yum update.
I run this every morning, so the system was 'synced' with rawhide yesterday.
Interesting to note that it claims to have installed (or updated packages) even though earlier output said that it wasn't going to try. For example, the kernel package.
During install:
error: %pre(kernel-2.6.10-1.1149_FC4.i686) scriptlet failed, exit status 255 error: install: %pre scriptlet failed (2), skipping kernel-2.6.10-1.1149_FC4
After the install:
Installed: kernel-devel.i686 0:2.6.10-1.1149_FC4 kernel.i686 0:2.6.10-1.1149_FC4
Something is not right here. ;-]

Hmmm, so what would be the solution to this problem?
Obviously I've got a bunch of packages that need to have the %post scripts run manually, along with still needing to install kernel and openssh-server.
Would turning off selinux do it (as a work around)?

is where your problem(s) began.
it's possible the selinux updates in rawhide are doing odd things with commands like ldconfig :)
Hmmm, so what would be the solution to this problem?
Obviously I've got a bunch of packages that need to have the %post scripts run manually, along with still needing to install kernel and openssh-server.
Would turning off selinux do it (as a work around)?
setenforce 0 might be a good start, I dunno, for certain if it is selinux causing it, though.

Yeah, turning of selinux fixed it (although I'm still not sure how to run the post scripts for all the packages that fails (hint hint))
I've actually been running without selinux for a couple of weeks now because my nose is to the grind stone and I need to use apache and mysql and for some reason I need to configure this to work (haven't had time to do so).
With the update I turned selinux on by accident and it caused all this stuff. Turning if off I was able to run yum update and get the kernel and openssh-server to install.

try this: touch /.autorelabel
reboot.
see if it works after that.
it might not, of course, rawhide eats babies. -sv

If you have to disable it for some reason, please please post the "avc: denied" messages in /var/log/messages to fedora-selinux-list (or file a Bugzilla) to give us a chance to figure out what the problem is.
Often too you can just disable protection for one service or just temporarily "setenforce 0" without disabling it permanently.
Also let me second Seth's statement wrt rawhide and babies :)

It seems like a bad idea to be depending on stuff to work in rawhide when your nose is to the grind stone...

Hopefully we can track down the problem once we get the avc messages.

I understand we're trying to trim sizes down at the moment, but I would hate to see this trend taken too far. Having local docs is very valuable when networks are not available (plane rides, dialup, etc) or when trying to quickly find information on a package. (I've used the online docs for python and php's standard libraries in preference to the local copies. But for add-on libraries and programs I always check /usr/share/docs first. It's because the quality of online docs is sometimes excellent and sometimes not worth the effort of searching. /usr/share/docs is easy to access and grep.)
*Note: In twisted's particular case it looks as though the documentation is downloadable separately from the code. So if we were to make the change permanent a good course of action would be to use Twisted_NoDocs-1.3.0.tar.bz2 in the Core SRPM and have a separate python-twisted-docs package in Extras that uses the TwistedDocs-1.3.0.tar.bz2 tarball.

BTW on the whole slimming process :
I do think more will be achieved by making network installations more convenient than putting a hard limit on the disk number. After all even if a floppy FC was possible today no one would go through the hassle of feeding hundreds of disks in the reader to make use of it.
Just have the network install kick ass (a one-stage install from the first CD not like I heard minimal install then boot then yum then whatever) and no one will care the about number of isos anymore (because mags will only ship the first CD and people with no network connectivity will the the last to complain FC isos are numerous enough they won't miss anything once they burnt them).
If you can do full livecds now it's certainly possible to pack a smart network installer on a single disk right ?

The biggest hassle when doing a network install is having to type in an ftp/http URL manually. Having a central mirror list accessible by XML-RPC or similar, with a failsafe list on the CD and the possibility to supply it manually would greatly simplify network installs.
Ideally, one would select location/timezone first, then get a sane mirror suggestion based on geographical proximity.
I guess probing the subnet for NFS/SMB servers (and ftp/http for that matter) would be nice too :-)

Network install is fine for those that have big network pipes. Some of us live at the end of a crappy 28K dialup because we have 25Kms of copper from the exchange and the encumbant Aussie telco won't do anything about it :-)

And a viable CD based alternative should be provided. Including the ability to make "extras" cd's on the fly perhaps. but i dont think that the fedora project should organize itself around your problems because you represent the past. I think it is important to embrace the future (network installs from truncated media) and still provide for those who [for whatever reason] are stuck in the past (28.8). On the fly CD's/DVD's are a great gapping tool for this IMO. -mf

I hardly think that not having "fast" network access everywhere you want to install is "the past". Network speed is relative; I have multiple T3s at the office so I can download ISOs fast and burn them and carry them home. I have 1.5M DSL at home, but it would still take way too long to install over that link. For Fedora 3, Core + Extras = 3.5G. If I even installed 50% of that, it would take 2.6 hours to install (if the install downloaded at 100% speed continuously, which it won't). Also, I don't always install where I have network access.
A significant part of the world does not have access to high speed Internet access (and probably will not for the foreseeable future).

Well, in your case wouldn't you prefer having more CDs not less ? This way once you have them you won't have to do lots of networking just to complete a barebones initial installation.
I do think the "we need to shrunk the distro so it fits in a small cd set" is a false problem. Network installs don't care, people without good networking would rather have a complete CD set.
