I assume you have an Intel graphics card; I can reliably reproduce the issue with an Intel GM45 graphics card - easiest way is to enable OpenGL screensavers. Just test any of the OpenGL screensavers and the system is frozen. Nothing interesting found in /var/log/messages or /var/log/Xorg.0.log though.

Yes... I run a few of them and it was frozed.
I've disabled desktop effects but after a while it frozed again. I've tested memory with memtest, I think that is not a failure of hardware.
Nothing interesting found in /var/log/messages or
/var/log/Xorg.0.log though.
