Here are my answers:
- Why do you believe diversity and inclusion are important for Fedora?
Many members of Fedora are from different places around the world, so diversity is something we live with every day we spend and this community. Yet, doesn't mean that everyone is accepted as they are. Inclusion has always been a weakness on each community since not everyone knows how to deal with such a diverse group. What I think is that we need a middle ground where people can share their experiences, teach others about their culture, language and more; and provide guidance in case of misunderstanding with other members of the community. Inclusion is the key to a healthy environment.
- Why do you want to serve as Fedora’s Diversity & Inclusion Advisor?
I think I have been doing this for a long time, yet, when people experience difficulties they don't have an official place to go to. It would be nice that people could count on position that can provide it.
- What specific minority group(s) or issues can you offer insight about?
- LatinAmerican (Venezuela) - Spanish Speaker - Woman - Designer
- What perspectives, experiences, or knowledge about diversity and inclusion could you share with the Fedora community?
I could share about 11 years of insight of being a women trying to get into the IT field in a country where females are not supposed to do so. Also I can share my experience learning a different language using an online service, and my learning curve with the help of the Fedora team to become a Designer and make it a business I can live from. I could also provide advice about harassment (online and personal). probably there is a couple more of stories, but that will require a larger coffee.
- Do you have experience working across various cultures? (Cross cultural refers to various geographies, cultural groups, etc.)
Yes, I help organize one of the largest events in my region, FLISoL, which is held the same day across the 23 countries that speak spanish. I've also been a GSoC mentor for an Indian student, publish (almost regularly) an educational podcast about opensource design tools, help several friends of the community to learn spanish in exchange for other languages, contribute with several talks a year (and when I can't go, I record them). I think the answer is yes.
