Introduction to the Fedora Security Guide ready for review

Self-Introduction: Keith Henkell

Hi everyone, Keith Henkell New York, USA (UTC-4) I have worked as a security analyst and a security consultant for almost 10 years. I am pretty familiar with Fedora from a user perspective as I have run just about every version since Core 1. I also have some background with everything from project management, to systems engineering, to networking. I'm pretty familiar with the writing and markup tools, but I need to dig into DocBook which is completely new to me. I have not contributed to any other projects so this is all new to me. I look forward to learning what you guys need so I can pitch in. I know I can contribute to the security side of things and anything else I can help out with is also great. Self Introduction: Adam D. Ligas

Hey All, I'm not exactly sure how this is supposed to go, so I'll go bullet-point style based on the wiki layout. I apologize in advance for this being a tad long. Legal Name: Adam D. Ligas Location: Kensington, CT, USA Profession: IT App/Sys Admin Affiliation: Personal/Self (Not here officially for my employer) IRC Nick: Agnt86 (freenode registered) Goals: My overall goal is to contribute to the Fedora project where I can with the end result being an overall better experience for new and veteran Fedora users. I hope to contribute to this by creating new documentation where I can, and cleaning up existing documentation. I find I am generally able to construct decent "HowTo" or "Tutorial" documents. My mother is a teacher, so I blame her for this ability :). I contacted Eric Christensen prior to setting myself up here, and submitted a first cut of a small addition to the CryptoGuide. It basically goes over using encrypted 7-Zip archives as an easy "portable" encryption solution. I still want to polish it and dress it up for the wiki, but I think its a good example of my work. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Drafts/CryptoGuide/7Zip I also find I can be good at catching "little" things in existing documentation - like how the "SelfIntroduction" wiki page references a totally different PGP keyserver then the "CreatingKeys" page. I have no idea where this ability comes from, so Mom's off the hook here :). Previous to this I've been somewhat "involved" with the Fedora project. I've had a bugzilla account for a long time, and have submitted some bug reports over the years. Its not much, but it was a start. Historical Qualifications: Most of my written work is for my employer, so its not available for review. I work for a large health insurance company, and although FOSS is growing inside the establishment, the whole idea is somewhat "new" for them given how closed/protected/proprietary the rest of the business and data is. Hopefully the 7-Zip guide gives folks an idea of my writing. I'm pretty advanced computer skills wise. I feel I have a fairly broad knowledge of computers in general, and am quick to pick up on new things. I'm not much of a programmer, though I can struggle through a few languages if I really want/need to do something. I'm a pretty handy IT "translator". I find I can be an effective bridge for end users to programmers/designers. I also have experience with human factors engineering/usability. I've been a long time Red Hat/Fedora user (since RH6) and would like to "give back" to the community I've gotten so much from. I think this blends well with some of the main Fedora Project goals, like working upstream as much as possible. Fedora strives to "Do the right thing", and so do I. Publican requires KDE?

Hello, I noticed that Publican (0.3.0 from Rawhide) has a BuildRequires/Requires for kdesdk. I don't use any other KDE software and this requirement causes a huge additional download on my system. Could someone explain why Publican needs this packages and if there is any way this could be avoided? Thanks, Keith.

F9 schedule slip to 13 May

Fellow Contributors: Although I'm a bit sad that the Fedora 9 schedule had to slip[1], I am happy on two accounts: * More time for l10n * FESCo made a hard decision but the right one, for the right reasons Therefore, we are moving back the deadline for translation of these parts of the fedora-release-notes package to 29 April (two additional weeks): * Release Notes [2] * About Fedora [3] * Readme [4] * Readme Burning ISOs [5] * Readme Live Image [6] The Fedora Docs schedule[7] has been updated to reflect this new schedule. We can live with late translations, we're going to publish as frequently as possible (rolling rebuilds) * Recruiting, retention -- training and self-documentation in the post-F9 world: * More people, more to do, so try to get the knowledge "load" of the core people * Post F9-release: start writing howto's on FDP processes and workflows based on all the info that exists in the wiki. * Post F9-release: see what and how we can extend our toolchain with stuff like publican and docbook-lint (et al). Full Name: Ryan John Lerch Location: Brisbane, Australia (UTC+10) Personal Goals for Fedora Docs: My motivation for joining the fedora docs team is to learn more about fedora, tech writing and documentation toolchaining while being able to give something back to the community. However, I am a little unsure how I would like to (or can) contribute to the fedora-docs project. The first area that jumps out at me is the Desktop User Guide (?Fedora User Guide?) Historical qualifications: Other projects that I help out on are Inkscape (http://inkscape.org/) and The openclipart library (http://openclipart.org/) Over at Inkscape, I help out with writing docs and tutorials, bug triaging and responding to the question tracker. I finished my Bachelor of Information Technology majoring in Software Engineering and Multimedia in 2003. I'm a fairly new fedora user (< 12 months) so I hope i can provide an insight for other new users after making the switch to a free and open source operating system.
