good day, writers. while doing some mockups of docs look for fsn.org.yu at http://www.gnome-ppp.org/fsn/template.html, i thought about doing some work for fedora community. what i want is to `upgrade the look` of fedora docs? should i try do something pretty (like novell with novell linux desktop will have) or is it a no-no? to do some mockups so you can see what i'm talking about?
bye, vladeck.
Looks nice. I do think we should have different artwork/icons for fedora docs instead of using the same ones as in RH docs.

Yes, mockups would be good to see. I like some of the ideas I see on that page, such as a terminal icon for <screen> blocks.
I haven't thought about licensing artwork. I guess you can just contribute it under the FDL?

The icons used are from Fedora itself and GPL'd; I think a notice to that effect in the &LEGALNOTICE; would take care of this part. I personally don't like all the different color bars, but I think the terminal icon is cute. I also think that in the service of consistency, we should try and limit artwork to that already available in Fedora -- or, at worst, request that Garrett or one of his trusty cohort produce something consistent for us.
Keep in mind also the a11y factors. The current HTML rendering provides full functionality for text-based browsers, text-to-speech engines, and so forth, with a minimum of effort. Certainly the transformations could be done to take care of this -- at least to provide <img alt=""> tags and such, but we'd have to look at the possible impact on visually impaired users, etc.
I don't doubt that there's ways around any impediments, but it's not a project I'm personally interested in. Then again, that's the great thing about having a community; someone else likely is! :-) It's early and I haven't had my coffee, so I hope this makes some sense.

ok, great: i'll do some and send you the links in da day or two.
bye, vladeck.
p.s. i'll consider the things you all mentioned in you emails :)
Yes. We definitely need icons for the Fedora docs. The icons in the OS itself are GPL'ed except the ones with the Shadowman in them. The admonition icons we use for the Fedora docs are the same as the ones we use for the RHEL docs, but they are not GPL'ed: http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/selinux-faq-fc2/ln-legalnotice.html
I asked Garrett about GPLing them, but he has since left the company, so it would be nice to create new ones for the Fedora docs and anyone else who wants to use them for DocBook output. We can even try to get them added to Fedora so they are installed by default. That would be ideal.
As someone else said, I think the link you sent has too many colors -- they tend to distract from the content. The screen icon is nice. It looks like you are using the icons from Fedora and adding them to the HTML look and feel. If that is the case, that shouldn't be hard to implement via CSS. It would be nice to have graphics for the document navigation. Send us some mockups, and we can go from there.

I like them. They have a nice, clean look to them. I prefer the logo on the left, but that is just my opinion. The top blue headerseems a little big. I would like to see it smaller. I would also prefer the Fedora Project logo instead of the Fedora Core logo since we might get into documenting software in Fedora Extras or Fedora Legacy.
On the Fedora website, we already have a header with a logo, so we would want to use a slightly different css to not add the blue header to them.
Just to make sure, did you create the icons or borrow them from somewhere else? If you borrowed them, we need to make sure they are under the GPL. I would prefer to have ones made specifically for the Fedora docs.
Also, it looks like you mocked up a page of the help that is included in one of our configuration tools. Since those tools are shipped in both Fedora and RHEL, we might want to do away with the Fedora logo in the CSS for the config tools help inside the tool so the developer doesn't have to make sure the right logo is included for whatever OS he is building the package for.
Thanks for doing this! Tammy
I agree with what Tammy has said. My only suggestion is that I would still like to see the text links at the bottom. It's always handy to have text links in addition to image/graphical links.
Otherwise, quite nice. :)

gtk+ docs, but will do some myself

no problem, will do some mockups again (based on suggestions)
bye, vladeck.
http://www.gnome-ppp.org/fedora/docs/network-config-ethernet.html http://www.gnome-ppp.org/fedora/docs/network-config-ethernet-2.html
another mockup: http://www.gnome-ppp.org/fedora/docs/network-config- ethernet-3.html
still uses logo (white version from fedora site), bluecurve note icon and modified inverse icons (cleaned up); and makes it hard for packagin: fedora & rhel :/ will figure out how to do something better without logo...
bye, vladeck.

I agree with Tammy with one change -- I would prefer to see the navigation icons (arrows) match the ones used in Bluecurve, instead of using a different set of arrows.

Sure. We could do that. It would definitely fit into the style of the website. Garrett doesn't work at Red Hat anymore, but I have most of his source files. The trick is finding the right ones and sizing them properly. I'll add it to my list of things to do but as a low priority because we have big news coming out about the magazine soon. ;-) Sorry I can't share just yet...
