How to support python 3.8 from RHEL 8.2 in EPEL?

Folks - Looks like RHEL 8.2 will have python 3.8 in addition to python 3.6. From the 8.2 beta: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 for x86_64 - AppStream Beta (RPMs) Name Stream Profiles Summary python27 2.7 [d][e] common [d] Python programming language, version 2.7 python36 3.6 [d][e] build, common [d] Python programming language, version 3.6 python38 3.8 [d][e] build, common [d] Python programming language, version 3.8 Currently, %python_pkgversion is set to 3 in /usr/lib/rpm/macros.d/macros.python-srpm from python-srpm-macros. python3-devel is still provided only by python36-devel, so presumably all EPEL8 python packages will continue to be built against python 3.6. But I imagine that people will soon be asking for python 3.8 versions of EPEL packages. How can we provide those? Does this have to be done in some modular fashion - which seems to come back to the discussion of whether or not every package has to become its own module or whether to group them together somehow. Or since both python modules are "default" modules and we can install both python36-devel and python38-devel at the same time, perhaps we can define the python3_other* macros again for python38 and just go that way? Hi EPEL developers. I am using CentOS 8 and am using various packages in the EPEL repository. I am interested in seeing gcc-gnat added to EPEL. I cannot find a current Fedora maintainer listed for this package, but it is available in Fedora (at least in version 32). Are there any EPEL maintainers who are interested in creating an EPEL version of this package? Thank you

proposal: EPEL 8 Next

Howdy folks, A large part of my day job is working on CentOS Stream. Naturally I would like it to be successful and have wide adoption. I know that EPEL will play a big role in this success. EPEL is extremely popular. Many users consider RHEL and CentOS unusable without it. The problem we are facing is that EPEL 8 cannot be 100% compatible with RHEL/CentOS 8 and CentOS 8 Stream at the same time. It is not uncommon for RHEL to ship library soname changes in minor releases. In the RHEL 8 cycle, those changes are showing up in CentOS 8 Stream first. EPEL 8 builds against the latest RHEL 8 release. This can result in EPEL 8 packages that are uninstallable on CentOS 8 Stream due to the library differences. One prominent example we have already seen is llvm-libs, which has increased its library soname in every RHEL 8 minor release so far. Another increase is planned for RHEL 8.3, which has already been released in CentOS 8 Stream. There are likely other incompatibilities that haven't been noticed yet. I expect this problem to grow worse as RHEL development continues and more packages are added to EPEL 8. This situation is hurting the adoption of CentOS Stream. To solve this problem, I am proposing that we create a new repository called EPEL 8 Next. - built against CentOS 8 Stream - opt-in for packagers (must request epel8-next dist-git branch) - opt-in for users (part of epel-release but disabled by default) - used *with* epel8, not *instead of* This will provide EPEL packagers a place where they can update their packages when necessary to be compatible with CentOS 8 Stream. These packages would also be useful for RHEL 8 users during the gap between a RHEL minor release and the equivalent CentOS 8 Linux rebuild. In theory this repository should also be directly consumable by RHEL 8 Beta releases. Similar to RHEL itself, breaking changes could be permitted in epel8-next in preparation for delivering them to epel8 around the time of the next RHEL minor release. This proposal may sound similar to epel8-playground. However, that was still built against RHEL 8, so it didn't solve the compatibility issue with CentOS 8 Stream. This proposal does draw on lessons learned from the playground experiment. - no automatic builds via packages.cfg - opt-in rather than opt-out - layering on top of epel8, rather than duplicating content I first suggested this idea at the last EPEL Steering Committee meeting, and we plan to discuss it again during the next one. Proposing an EPEL packaging SIG

Hello all, Following up from last week's EPEL Steering Committee meeting, I'm presenting a proposal to create a dedicated SIG to make it easier to get Fedora packages into EPEL and keep them maintained. Using the Fedora Changes Process template for this to help structure the proposal, though this is not really a Fedora Change. == Summary == Have a dedicated SIG for packagers who are interested in making more Fedora packages available for EPEL releases. == Owner == * Name: [[User:salimma|Michel Salim]] * Email: <michel(a)michel-slm.name> == Detailed Description == RHEL/CentOS releases are branched off from Fedora; since RHEL 8 this happens every 3 years. Only a subset of Fedora packages get shipped as part of RHEL, as Red Hat provides support on these packages for their paying customers; EPEL (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux) fills in the gap; this is similar to the old split between Fedora Core and Extras. EPEL packages are maintained in dist-git as additional branches on Fedora packages; however, unlike with Fedora releases, where by default a package gets branched for any new Fedora release, EPEL branches are only created if one of the package maintainers request it (it's opt- in). The rationale is that many Fedora packagers do not specifically care about EL, and with their long release cycles the maintenance burden is higher (e.g. upgrading to fix a security vulnerability might not be possible if the newer fixed version has unmet dependencies, so backporting the fix might be required). EL is more often used server side too, so the average Fedora packager is not expected to be an EL user. This poses a problem for those of us who rely on packages in EPEL -- e.g. Fedora Infrastructure, and many corporate deployments. Right now the process is as such: * An org starts rolling out the new version of EL * It turns out a given package is not available in EPEL * Bug filed requesting that package be branched and built * Worst case scenario, no response and we need to use the non- responsive maintainer flow * That package might have other unmet dependencies, so repeat this cycle several times * Wait for each of these packages to go through the update system * For organizations that have their own internal mirrors, they now need to sync the new packages There are several changes we can make to both streamline the process, and not increase the maintenance burden on the (other) maintainers of these packages: * Have an EPEL SIG modeled after the SIGs centered around programming language stacks (e.g. Python, Haskell, Java) * Have an expedited flow where this SIG can request EPEL branches and admin access to packages if there are no response from package maintainers for a set period (3 days? 1 week?) * whether it should be full admin access or whether such access should be scoped to epel* branches can be discussed. Full admin would make it possible to adjust the spec in Rawhide to be more EPEL friendly, for example * Members of the EPEL SIG can then branch these packages early when the next EL release is branched * The member of the SIG doing the branching should be designated as the primary EPEL assignee for that package One deviation we might want to have from how Python SIG works is... we probably don't want to encourage packagers to add this EPEL SIG as a comaintainer preemptively, but only as needed. == Benefit to Fedora == === Smoother infra upgrades === Upgrading the Fedora infrastructure will get easier over time, as more of the necessary EPEL packages become co-maintained by the EPEL SIG, which reduces the amount of time needed to get these packages available on new releases. === Packager experience === Reduced burden on Fedora package maintainers who are not interested in EPEL - the choice is now either: * One of the existing maintainers does the work of branching and building * The requestee gets added as a maintainer and does it * The request stalls because the requestee is not a packager === More involvement by CentOS-using organizations === With the EPEL SIG, we should encourage organizations with a long-term need for EPEL to get their members / employees added to this SIG, so scenarios #2 and #3 basically becomes this: * EPEL SIG gets added as co-maintainer of this package This might encourage more contributions from companies that traditionally just consume RHEL/CentOS + EPEL, and as RHEL/CentOS is increasingly developed in the open with CentOS-Stream, eventually also make it easier to get these companies' input into the EL development process. == Scope == * Proposal Owners * Ask Infra to set up EPEL SIG ACL and mailing list (for Bugzilla) * Announce this in epel-devel * Have documentation for the SIG as part of the EPEL documentation * Help onboard people to this SIG -- Michel Alexandre Salim profile: https://keyoxide.org/michel@michel-slm.name chat via email: https://delta.chat/ GPG key: 5DCE 2E7E 9C3B 1CFF D335 C1D7 8B22 9D2F 7CCC 04F2
