Everything seems to work, except the input window does not display any characters when I try to input Japanese. It displays a small window at the bottom.... here -- I just attached a screenshot (attached .jpg) It does work fine within mozilla however -- I can see what I type, select kanji, do everything I would expect... I haven't customized very much package-wise, trying to stick to official FC2 packages, updating as updates come available (haven't done the X update yet though)
When I just tested httx with LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8 on kedit (and KDE), but it works fine. which version of ttfonts-ja have you installed btw? if it's a testing package for Sazanami fonts, please revert it too to track your problem down efficiently.
What's interesting is when I set the LC_CTYPE env. variable like above, then fire up kedit -- no input window appears when I hit ctrl-space, and I cannot enter any Japanese. If I then unsetenv LC_CTYPE, it seems to work again, but I of course can't see whats in the input window. As for ttfonts-ja I'm currently using ttfonts-ja-1.2-34
Other env. variables that may be relevant:
SUPPORTED=en_US.UTF-8:en_US:en:ja_JP.UTF-8:ja_JP:ja XIM=htt XMODIFIERS=@im=htt LANG=en_US.UTF-8
/usr/sbin/htt is running under htt's uid, as is htt_server -nodaemon
httx, htt_xbe are also running under my uid.

So far, I have Japanese input working in Evolution email and in mozilla. I cannot get it to work with any OpenOffice program, or with the Opera browser, or with Konsole. I can display Japanese in all of these programs. I can't find menus for "Input Method" on any of them.
I am starting them at the command line as follows:
#LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8 oowriter
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Also, when converting kana to kanji, I find it very difficult to see which segment of the sentence I am converting. Is there a way to set up different display colors? I've seen no documentation on configuration/customization of IIim. Help would be appreciated.

You need to run httx with ja_JP.UTF-8 locale first so that non-gtk2 applications can communicates to htt_server using httx.

Yes, that works, but what I really wanted was to run OpenOffice in English, since the Japanese translations are not so great... When I do that, I get the input method started, but it will only give me romaji conversion candidates (no kana or kanji). So, I enter "nihon" and it will convert it to "nihon" but not to Japanese. -jr

Okay, it's finally working...
You are correct that for some reason, you have to run httx as the same user and from the same console that you launch your programs, otherwise it doesn't work. Even though the /etc/init.d/IIim script launches httx for you at startup, you have to kill it and start it manually. Is this a bug? Is it scheduled to be fixed?
Can I do a workaround where I edit the IIim startup script to launch httx as a particular user? What's the command line option for this?

it's not correct. httx will be run from xinput script, but not IIim initrc script. for before xinitrc 4.0.1, it should works as long as you have proper locale (in this case, even LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8 is enough) in .i18n or /etc/sysconfig/i18n. however if you have installed 3.40 or 3.41, you have to upgrade it to 3.42-1, because it allowed to run xinitrc script which has only .sh extension, but xinput script was missing .sh. so xinput script didn't work properly. (see Bug#122869) for xinitrc 4.0.1-1, even if you added LC_CTYPE in .i18n, it doesn't work unfortunately because of Bug#127746.

Is there any way to adjust the way it distinguishes between text that hasn't been converted yet, where the word breaks for conversion and so forth? For example, MS-IME underlines unconverted text, and word breaks show up as breaks in the underlining, while a dotted underline shows you which word you're currently working on. Is there a way to set up the text styles in IIIM/Canna?

Well, it depends on which dictionaries are you using. I fixed similar problem before. but it still appears for some reason in IIIMF and not updated for default.canna file. I'll update Canna package to improve the kanji conversion on IIIMF then.

Well, if you are using 0.82 or later, you can commit the preedit string with ENTER on gaim. and also send the message with ENTER then.

nope, it's not customizable unfortunately. however basically it's decorated as well, no? current position to convert the word to Kanji should be highlighted, and the string which is in preedit should be underlined. which applications did you experience that the preedit strings looks like committed strings?

er, it also depends on the learning by frequency of use in the dictionaries. although it's default behavior -- I could reproduce it -- the dictionaries probably needs to be optimized. however that way is not necessarily good for all of people, but anyway.

Thanks for the detailed response. Most of the problems with text decoration happen in GAIM, however I am using 0.77 so I'll update and try again. However I also have the same problem in Evolution. There is no text decoration at all, so I can't tell what is the pre-edit string and what is the current position. I notice that once I correct the dictionary the first time, it does remember the next time. It would be nice, however, to have the dictionary pre-loaded with frequency data so that I don't have to correct every word that I use for the first time. Finally, I still occasionally have a problem when I am editing a document and switching back and forth from IIIM to English input, eventually in IIIM it will not convert to Japanese anymore. It will only convert to romaji. For example, normally in IIIM, if you type: konnshuu You get hiragana こんしゅう and then you can convert to Kanji. However, when this bug happens, instead of getting hiragana こんしゅう, I get romaji: konnshuu When I try to convert it (press space) I get three conversion candidates in the 候補選択 window: 1 konnshuu 2 konnshuu 3 konnshuu This happens in all applications. I'm not sure what triggers it, but it only happens after I've been switching back and forth a lot. Is this a known bug and is there a fix?

Well, it depends on which dictionaries are you using. I fixed similar problem before. but it still appears for some reason in IIIMF and not updated for default.canna file. I'll update Canna package to improve the kanji conversion on IIIMF then.

Well, if you are using 0.82 or later, you can commit the preedit string with ENTER on gaim. and also send the message with ENTER then.

nope, it's not customizable unfortunately. however basically it's decorated as well, no? current position to convert the word to Kanji should be highlighted, and the string which is in preedit should be underlined. which applications did you experience that the preedit strings looks like committed strings?

Well, basically it did. but it breaks when upgrading. although there is the way to avoid/improve this problem, when the dictionaries will be imcompatible, the frequency data (.cld file) won't work then. but it's better than nothing anyway. let me try to improve it then.

I managed to reliably reproduce the bug with the romaji (see below).
Start a program from command line, such as:
$ LOCALE=ja_JP quanta
Inside quanta, the Japanese conversion works fine UNTIL you display a dialog box (for example, do a search and replace, etc.). After that, instead of getting hiragana, you get romaji and no kanji conversion.
I'd like to install the latest stable release and try again. What is the latest stable release and can you give me the URL to download it?

Thanks, I installed all the RPMs beginning with iiimf- and also initrc and canna. Unfortunately, now I cannot input Japanese at all in Quanta or other KDE apps. I press "CTRL-SPACE" and nothing happens. I can input Japanese to Gnome apps like mozilla and gedit. Can you send me a copy of your /etc/init.d/IIim script? I may have a problem with mine. Do I need to do anything else special to get it to work with KDE apps? -James

Sorry, my mistake. Restarting X solved the problem with KDE applications. Also, the bug seems to be fixed. After displaying a dialog box, I can still convert to Kanji. Thanks for the help. I did a find / -name li, and got two hits: /usr/share/locale/l10n/li /usr/share/locale/li Both are directories. So, where do I run LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 ./li from? Also, I have a question. When I type quickly in English I am constantly accidentally hitting SHIFT-SPACE and activating Japanese input. CTRL-SPACE also works...how do I turn off SHIFT-SPACE and leave only CTRL-SPACE? Finally, I have noticed what seems like a bug, as follows: When running Open Office Writer: When I press the HOME key, I get a settings menu, but there doesn't seem to be a way to cancel this. I tried ESC and many other keys. I have to turn off conversion to cancel it. This doesn't happen in other programs like Mozilla, Evolution or Quanta.

build a source code in my previous mail by yourself. as I mentioned the reason for that, there should be no difference between yours and mine anyway, though. i.e. you have to run the applications on ja_JP.UTF-8 instead of ja_JP anyway.

You could cancel it with Backspace, ctrl+g etc as it could be on kinput2. or though I've fixed this problem on Canna (and hopefully it will be available soon), you can fix this problem by adding the folow line into /etc/canna/default.canna, and restart cannaserver: (global-set-key "\Escape" 'quit)

FWIW I am running KDE in English and am able to input Japanese in OpenOffice.
Aside from locale settings you might need to change some settings in OpenOffice -- under Tools->Options->Language Settings you may need to enable Asian language support under Languages. I also needed to change the default font from Bitstream Vera Sans to a Japanese font under Text Document --> Basic Fonts (Asian) to make things visible.

Another scrap of information -- if within my kde session I fire up a gnome app like gedit, hit ctrl-space, input works fine, and I can see what I enter in the input box. Same with mozilla... If I log into a newly created account, under gnome, the input method also works. (and in fact within gmail I input text within the main window, not in a subwindow, which is what kmail used to do on my old laptop with RH 7.3 & kinput2...) But-- if inside that same gnome session I fire up a kde app like kedit, I have the same input problems as with a kde app in my kde session: input box pops up, but with no visible text. So somehow kde apps are the problem for me, and even then mechanically the input window appears to be working, just nothing is displayed...

I think you are running httx and the applications with proper locale. but please make sure it with locale command again. I noticed that this problem happens if httx and the applications is running on ja_JP.eucJP locale. but I couldn't reproduce this problem on the below locale.

My locale is like below except LC_CTYPE is also set to en_US.UTF-8 by default. I will have to track backwards I guess and see where thats getting set... If I set it manually, then fire up kedit & try to do Japanese I don't even get an input window. I think I've tried setting it .i18n with similarly bad results...
Its also not impossible eucJP is set somewhere, but after grepping through my home dir. I can't see where that would be. I will keep looking, but any hints would be appreciated!

Ah -- its fixed!
I just needed LC_CTYPE explicitly set in my .i18n file. Probably my bad experience with it being in .i18n earler was due to my other problems, namely either having the Sazanami fonts and/or using iiim version 11.4-60.
So -- with the 11.4-46.svn1587 version of iiim, my .i18n file containing:
LC_CTYPE="ja_JP.UTF-8" XIM=htt
Things seem to behave Japanese wise.
