Hello all,
I'm getting the $SUBJECT error when I try to install a rawhide kernel on an updated f16 vm.
# rpm -ihv kernel-3.2.0-0.rc6.git0.1.pnfsdlexp.fc16.x86_64.rpm Preparing... ########################################### [100%] 1:kernel ########################################### [100%] grubby fatal error: unable to find a suitable template # uname -r 3.1.5-6.fc16.x86_64
Things like the network and NFS do not come up due the fact the modules can not be found... so things are not being installed correctly....
Google searching the error I see a number bugzillas that are being blissfully ignored...
Just curious if anybody else has seen this error and what they did about it...
steved.

Being extra super vigilant about grub.conf and studying GRUB 2. There's no cure, AFAIK.
Note that many of the BZs are not the cross like you're doing: e.g. I hit that in F16 on F16, Rawhide on Rawhide. Happens all the time these days.

They all have one thing in common: the initramfs isn't getting used. Sometimes depmod is run and dracut isn't. Sometimes dracut is run but depmod hasn't been so the initramfs doesn't have any modules in it. And yet other times both of those are run just fine, but the initrd line isn't added to the grub config. I've personally seen the 'no suitable template' error and it works just fine on reboot.
In all cases we've seen (except the rawhide one where dracut moved out of /sbin), there are no error logs, nothing in /var/log/messages, and nothing that would otherwise indicate a problem happened during the %posttrans script.
The bugzillas aren't being ignored really. They aren't _kernel_ problems, but we don't really know what the problem is. If someone has thoughts on it, I'd love to hear them.

If you're feelign brave you could try: http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=3594571
It works for me on the ppc64 systems I tried.
If it worls for you I'll add the patch to bug 124246

Avoid that bug. It's really old and mostly ignored. Just file a new one for whatever problem you've seen.
You probably want to also explain the details of what you're trying to fix, and possibly provide a testcase.

My experience with the upgrading to F16 was the new grub2 was causing the problems. However, the way the install scripts were written, they update both grub.conf (grub1) and grub2.cfg (grub2). grub.conf is updated correctly, it is just the grub2.cfg isn't (in fact it is empty, hence the warning). Because my system still uses grub1 in the bootloader (not sure how to force it to use grub2), everything boots fine for me (for now :-/ ). So I just ignore the warning.

This I noticed on my one box is because systemd starts network and NFS in parallel and NFS finishes ahead (and fails) of a fully configured network. After I log in, usually a 'mount -a' fixes my NFS woes (though it is annoying). It would be nice to tell NFS to block until the network is up.
That is my experiences so far with the same problems you have. I should probably file bugzilla, then again you said others have already done that.
Cheers, Don

My box had the exact opposite problem, I'm not using grub2. On upgrade to F16 grub1 (/boot/grub/grub.conf) was blank but grub2 (/boot/grub2/grub.cfg) worked just fine. Deleting grub.conf caused it to stop whining about being unable to find a template and now all is well.
In my case (and Don's it sounds like) this was completely cosmetic...

Does your systemp use UEFI to boot? At one point grub2 was not able to correctly handle EFI and grub1 was used - I am not sure of the current grub2 state of affairs with regard to EFI.
That -may- explain why grub1 is still being used ... grub experts will know more .... :-)

FWIW I sent a patch to pjones yesterday to print a bit more more information as each "template" is deemed "not suitable," if you add "--debug" to the grubby commandline. Hopefully that'll help debug this stuff a little better in the future.
It's built (in koji at least) for rawhide & F16 now as grubby-8.8

Confused sorry, Do you mean grubby in a terminal, or as a kernel arg on boot up?
