Isn't it possible to install the F11 live images to an ext3 root filesystem (and only one partition)? AFAIR ext2 worked with F9 and F10 images.

Nope -- ext4 has more substantial changes to the on-disk format than the ext2->ext3 move did

When I tried that I got a message about the file system type not matching. It does seem like an odd requirement, but it does seem to prevent putting the official spins on ext3 since they are getting the default ext4.
