ear friends,
I am pleased to announce the immediate availability of GNUmed 0.7.0 (server v13).
http://www.gnumed.de/downloads/client/0.7/ http://www.gnumed.de/downloads/server/v13/
Packages are available through OpenSUSE build service for OpenSUSE, Fedora and Mandriva
The database, as usual, needs to be upgraded to v13. The previous v12 version will remain untouched so in case of problems one can just go back until fixed.
This release features a rather unexpected new functionality: visual progress notes. Those are sketches/images (such as visual markers onto templates or clinical photographs) standing side by side with the clinical narrative of any given encounter.
Translations have seen a big improvement, particularly Dutch.
Several major inconsistencies have been solved, particularly around switching encounters on a patient and the dreaded Edit Area layout issue.
Here is the Changelog:
0.7.0
- new: manage diagnostic orgs - new: manage date of death per patient - new: manage discontinuation of substance intake - new: turn substance intake entry into allergy - new: hooks - after_substance_intake_modified - hook after_test_result_modified - new: visual progress notes - new: initial support for FreeDiams drug database frontend including install helper - new: commandline option --ui=<web/wxp> with rudimentary CherryPy frontend - new: show list of all configuration settings - new: configurable web search for test type from test result edit area - new: systemwide/user-level optional shutdown scripts invoked from /usr/bin/gnumed - new: Centor/McIsaac-Score as keyword expansions - new: man pages for backup scripts - new: partial Catalan translation
- improved: login dialag: - hint about local DB on failure - do not show password ;-) - improved: show allergies in substance intake edit area - improved: warn on creating database users with empty passwords - improved: default region/country for new-person creation - improved: show lab name/contact details in measurement tooltip - improved: always use new person creation rather than old - improved: placeholders: - name::*::* - improved: various typos - improved: do not fail if unable to show part when adding documents - improved: cleaner/faster display of documents in tree, and sorted, eventually ! - improved: ARRIBA is now v2.0.4 - improved: using Git for SCM now - improved: gnumed.py now directly under client/ - improved: startup size will never go beyond screen size/below 100x100 pixel - improved: Dutch translation - improved: use per-engine wildcards on form template selection
The full git log is appended.
Please report any bugs you manage to find !
Thanks, Karsten
Hi all,
This is a call for help with GNUmed on Fedora. I have packaged GNUmed 0.7.1 and server 13.1 for Fedora.
It is available from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/SebastianHilbert:/GNUmed/Fed...
Since I am not a regular user of Fedora I would welcome any reports on if it installs and runs.
Especially running a local GNUmed database would be highly interesting.
This is done by installing the packages gnumed-server and running
gm-bootstrap_server as root.
Any help is appreciated, Sebastian
Hi Sebastian,
I installed gnumed-client from your repository. It does launch the log window. Obviously, I am not able to go further. I am currently installing the server.
I would be pleased to send feeback. Is there a sort of trial database somewhere, so that I can test some advanced features?
Thanks Jerome

Ok, I connected to the public database (hum... 'wasn't aware of. Note for myself: read the doc.) The client works on fedora12 through a quick click'n'see on random feature.
Is there a sort of typical test flow from which I could report how gnumed from repos on F12 behaves?
Local server feedback will come next.

Hi, I installed gnumed through the repo by reading the wiki. Thus it seems to be clear enough for a middle-fedora-skilled person.
However, I would have few words: - maybe a simpler repo file name would be less scary (say, GNUmed.repo instead of home:SebastianHilbert:GNUmed.repo) - user just have to copy this file in /etc/yum.repos.d . Then yum install gnumed will install postgresql and other dependencies if they are not installed.
The postgresql configuration is well described: I never used it (just mysql, sometimes...) and I got it working without pain.
Regarding the Correspondence feature, I had some difficulties... As I am not an MD, I lack a lot of vocabulary, and I don't know what should be the expected behaviour... For now, I can tell you the following: - Set Kirk as active client - Choose 'Write a letter' in the correspondence menu -> shows a list of different templates - Choose 'Therapiebericht Physiotherapie (GNUmed-Standard)' , the openoffice template - click Ok ->GNUmed fall in a deadlock - restart -> redo the above steps -> now I have 'Select the health issues you are interested in' - Select the 'Unattributed episode' -> Ok -> "Now select the issue you want to report on" - Select 'Backpain' -> Ok -> The same window reopen! -> Ok ->reopen -> Ok ..... - Click Cancel -> go back to the previous window -> Cancel -> reopen previous -> Cancel -> OpenOffice opens with a form - Close OpenOffice -> GNUmed open a "choose episode to file the document" I have the document under "Documents" for this patient. Reselecting the "Write letter" menu with OpenOffice template makes Gnumed starting a deadlock again.
The Latex template "Medication list" works well. The referral letter has the same strange behaviour than OOo regarding the Ok->Reopen->Ok ... And when I cancel everything, I get a "Error creating printable document." Though yesterday, I managed to produce a referral letter...
Sorry for this tedious and maybe not so pertinent report. I hope you will manage to make something with! For now, I stay with this binary installation, without any sources/compilation so that you can ask for end-user test whenever you want. In future, I will be interesting in coding around the DICOM feature.
Best regards Jerome

Regarding the Correspondence feature, I had some difficulties... As I am not an MD, I lack a lot of vocabulary, and I don't know what should be the expected behaviour... For now, I can tell you the following:

- Choose 'Therapiebericht Physiotherapie (GNUmed-Standard)' , the
openoffice template
- click Ok ->GNUmed fall in a deadlock
- restart -> redo the above steps -> now I have 'Select the health issues
you are interested in'
- Select the 'Unattributed episode' -> Ok -> "Now select the issue you want
to report on"
- Select 'Backpain' -> Ok -> The same window reopen! -> Ok ->reopen -> Ok
.....
- Click Cancel -> go back to the previous window -> Cancel -> reopen
previous -> Cancel -> OpenOffice opens with a form
- Close OpenOffice -> GNUmed open a "choose episode to file the document"
I have the document under "Documents" for this patient. Reselecting the "Write letter" menu with OpenOffice template makes Gnumed starting a deadlock again.
Your tests are very helpful for us. Could you please reproduce the deadlock situation an mail us the gnumed log file. It should sit in ~/.gnumed/
The Latex template "Medication list" works well. The referral letter has the same strange behaviour than OOo regarding the Ok->Reopen->Ok ... And when I cancel everything, I get a "Error creating printable document." Though yesterday, I managed to produce a referral letter...
If you have a chance please mail us a corresponding log file.

That was great work and definetly helful for us.
For now, I stay with this binary installation, without any sources/compilation so that you can ask for end-user test whenever you want. In future, I will be interesting in coding around the DICOM feature.
For now the Dicom feature just open a Dicom viewer. The original idea was that if there was a Dicom viewer for Linux, Mac oder Windows that would accept some sort of intercommunication we would use to open the currently active patient and so on.
On Mac there is Osirix which could hold the Dicom CD (cardiac, CT , whatever). Osirix has an XML-rpc interface. So in an ideal world when the patient comes back from a cardiologist with a CD the doctor would store it in Osirix and when he wants to review it again he could access it from within GNUmed. GNumed would then open the corresponding patient and study in Osirix.
Thanks agian for your effort, Sebastian

Let's do it. :) I am filing a request for the review. I shall also poke a few people to speed it up.

While I very much look forward to see this happening I am afraid that the spec file is not in good shape. I really hope that some skilled person (which I am not) will have a look at it and transform that into something that meets the high standards of packages that get included into distributions.
Any pointers and help is appreciated and I will happily try to follow all advise given.
One of the issues is that I do not currently have a Fedora system set up so the build pretty much relies on the OBS (opensuse multidistributions build service)
Thanks for the effort, Sebastian

Exactly why I wanted to get this request filed. Someone from the packager group will take it up, clean it and finalise it. It is a long process and may take a considerable time.
Any pointers and help is appreciated and I will happily try to follow all advise given.
Have a look https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/Guidelines
A simpler method will be to get on #fedora-devel or the devel mailing list and ask for help. https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/devel
If you need any help regarding this, or you are having any problem, please let me know.

I think it depends on which desktop environment you use. I am currently running gnome, and the PackageKit application does not have the capability to add new repos. One thing that can be done is another package that installs and enables your repo, then the user use yum or PackageKit or whatever he want to install the packaged gnumed components.
Here is a citation from the PackageKit help: At this time, PackageKit does not offer a way to add new repositories to your system. It only allows you to enable or disable known repositories. However, it is often possible to make a new repository known to PackageKit by installing a package with the necessary information. These are usually called (foo)-release, where foo is the name of the repository.
It means that you could provide a gnumed-repo.rpm on the website. By opening this file, the user will trigger the package manager to install the repo.
The postgresql configuration is well described: I never used it (just mysql, sometimes...) and I got it working without pain.
Great
As you say!
For the issue reports, maybe it is better that I use the bug tracker? Regarding the DICOM, I will soon begin a new thread on the mailing list.
I am glad to be helpful!
Jerome
ps: I just saw that the gnumed-devel list is a recipient, but I did not subscribe to.
Regarding the Correspondence feature, I had some difficulties... As I am not an MD, I lack a lot of vocabulary, and I don't know what should be the expected behaviour... For now, I can tell you the following:
- Set Kirk as active client
- Choose 'Write a letter' in the correspondence menu -> shows a list of
different templates
Sorry for this tedious and maybe not so pertinent report. I hope you will manage to make something with!

Hi Jerome,
This is great news for me as it is the first report of anyone on Fedora ever having installed it through the repo.
Moreover it show that I have not screwed up the dependencies :-)
Anyway if you have time please have a look at http://wiki.gnumed.de/bin/view/Gnumed/FedoraGuideShort
and let us know how to improve it to better match the Fedora workflow.
If you are still not scared away (:-) please test the correspondence feature. Please try to write a letter from within GNUmed. Please select the one template which works with OpenOffice and should produce a form in OpenOffice and one of the Latex-templates which should either give an error or produce an pdf.
If the pdf stuff works it will tell you but it will let you access it through the document tab as well.
Any report is appreciated.
Sebastian
Hi, I got it working quite easily, by logging in with the 'any-doc' user. The documentation is comprehensive, even regarding pure postgresql settings.
Here is a report on my system:
Fedora 12
[root@Djelaptop pgsql]# uname -r 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE
[root@Djelaptop pgsql]# postgres --version postgres (PostgreSQL) 8.4.3
[root@Djelaptop pgsql]# rpm -qa | grep gnumed gnumed-doc-0.7.1-6.1.i386 gnumed-server-13.1-2.1.i386 gnumed-common-0.7.1-6.1.i386 gnumed-client-0.7.1-6.1.i386
I installed GnuMed from yum, by adding your repo: home_SebastianHilbert_GNUmed
I hope it was helpful for you. If you want to perform special tests, just ask me.

Ok, I connected to the public database (hum... 'wasn't aware of. Note
for
myself: read the doc.) The client works on fedora12 through a quick click'n'see on random feature.
Is there a sort of typical test flow from which I could report how
gnumed
from repos on F12 behaves?
Local server feedback will come next.

Unless somethings is seriously screwed up there is a public database

In the login windows you can select the profile public database at salaam.homeunix.com ?

Is this the best way in Fedora ? Is there another way through some GUI ?
I think it depends on which desktop environment you use. I am currently running gnome, and the PackageKit application does not have the capability to add new repos.
