FWN 132 on f-announce-l

I approved the FWN 132 message on Fedora announce list. I also added in an announcements beat, which I had missed on Sunday. So that is now out the door. Moving forward, there are two things we have to make sure happen: 1) Someone approves the FWN announcements on f-announce-l (this can be me, as I do have admin on that list) or one of several others. 2) One of our two editors posts on their blog, so that the announcement also ends up on Planet. Thanks to everyone for picking me up, stepping up, and helping to keep FWN going. I really appreciate it. --Max

i'm not dead yet

My head is down, and I'm working on a bunch of post-FUDCon, budget, 6-12 month planning stuff with Greg and our boss this week... FWN is still very much on my mind though, and it is not forgotten. I have had a couple of emails from beat writers looking to step up, and maybe start to assume some of the "editor" duties of FWN. I would be *thrilled* to see that transition "just happen", and have someone swoop in here and help get a FWN out the door, and then figure out a schedule to re-base us on that allows their particular vision to be implemented. I could then see my role as one of helping to move things forward on the wordpress multi-user front, and the infrastructure improvements that will make FWN more sustainable long-term. But if someone is ready to jump in and take some leadership, consider this your "blessing" from me! :) I can't say enough how much I appreciate the hard work of this entire team. It's been a challenging couple of weeks for FWN, but I think we're moving along well. Critical path: 1) new editor in chief, someone to handle the content 2) go through our beat writer roster and figure out if some of the people who have been MIA are coming back, or if we really need to step up our recruitment 3) infrastructure changes for a more scalable content process in the future. that's all i have for the moment... --Max

Mirror bandwidth and user redirection

(for consideration for FWN, thanks.) Tonight I deployed a slight update to MirrorManager that I'd been wanting to do for a while. The basic selection algorithm for choosing the order in which to return mirrors to clients remains the same: prefer same netblocks, internet2 in same country if on internet2, same country, same continent, then global, in that order. However, until now, faster mirrors (those with larger bandwidths) were returned with equal probability as slower mirrors. This means not enough traffic was being sent to our gigabit-connected mirrors, and too much traffic was being sent to our slower mirrors. Each mirror's bandwidth value is now used as a weight. Mirrors with larger bandwidth will have a a higher probability of being returned earlier in the mirrorlist selection. Slower mirrors can still be returned as the first mirrorlist selection because this is based on probabilities, but should not be overwhelmed anymore. For countries with fewer mirrors, such as India, where there's some relatively fast mirrors, and several relatively slower mirrors, this should mean that users will more often get directed to the faster mirrors. FWN: Marketing beat complete

Just a quick note that the Marketing beat has been updated from last week and is complete. Everyone, if you plan to have your beat in for this week, please echo to the list so we have an idea if we have enough content for an issue this week. It seems there is significant momentum building to evolve FWN from the wiki to Wordpress and/or Fedora TV. We may want to start some discussion around this after we get the next issue out. Certainly we could reference and create RSS feeds for audio and video items posted to Fedora TV from within a Wordpress FWN.
