Hello,
I would like to use RHQ with SQL Server as a database backend. I understand that this is not currently supported. I have also come across this error since I am trying to use SQL Server 2008 R2: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?format=multiple&id=758362 . This completely prevents me from installing using 2008 R2.
My question is whether there is a timeline for adding official SQL Server support, or for a fix of the bug referenced above. Specifically I am wondering if any of this may make it into one of the next releases?
Thanks, Steve
Providing SQL Server support was actually attempted 2.5 years ago:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=535448
It may still be around in the code, but I remember when the person who worked on this stopped (he did spend alot of time on it), it was to be considered an experimental feature at best. He found SQL Server hard to work with due to its internal implementation (it apparently doesn't support MVCC) - he had to muck with the isolation levels and IIRC he still couldn't get it to work right and was hitting some DB locking issues. Here's his one comment on this:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=535448#c2
There are no plans to make this supported in one of the upcoming releases. As of right now, I think it will probably require someone in the community taking ownership of this effort for it to go anywhere in the short term.

Understood, thanks for the info.
Is there also any chance of the SQL Server 2008 R2 issue referenced above being modified? Understanding that it is experimental and unsupported, it would be useful to at least be able to install the server against this version- because it currently does not let you complete the installation at all.
Thanks, Steve

Hello,
I was just checking in again to see if the question in my previous post could possibly be addressed? I would like to install RHQ against SQL Server 2008 R2 despite the fact that it would be experimental. Would this modification to the install screen be possible (to simply let you continue the install using this version)?
Thanks again, Steve
