The fedora-35 tests should be working again - the composes have been fixed. Please add a [citest bad] comment to any PRs you have that you would like to rerun with fedora-35. The ansible-2.9 (el7) tests are still broken - still waiting for a rhel7 container image with the NSS fix.

CI: ansible-2.9 tests are not good

I recently upgraded to the latest rhel7 container image. There was a problem with CA certs. I reverted to the previous image. Now ansible is giving me the following error: A worker was found in a dead state I've tried several suggestions found online (env no_proxy="*", etc.) - nothing helps. Using ansible -vvvvvvvvv - no further information. Using ANSIBLE_DEBUG=true - no help. Using ANSIBLE_FORKS=1 - no help. The machine has plenty of RAM. I can reproduce locally using podman. Not sure what is going on. So just ignore the ansible-2.9 CI results until further notice.

How to handle role requirements on other roles

Many of our roles need to use the functionality provided by another role. An example for the Logging role: * When new certs need to be generated with deploying the logging system, integration with the certificate role. See also (Certificate README)[ https://github.com/linux-system-roles/certificate/blob/master/README.md] * A RELP connection may need to open a port in the firewall, and could use the firewall role. * A RELP connection may need to set SELinux attributes for a port, and could use the selinux role. There are many more candidates which could use the Certificate role, the Network role, the Firewall role, etc. Any role that needs an X509 cert could use the certificate role. Any role that needs to open a port could use the firewall and selinux roles. I have submitted a proposal at https://github.com/linux-system-roles/linux-system-roles.github.io/pull/78 please comment

Best practice to revert/disable settings made by a role?

Hi, Currently my role pam_pwd [0] enables pam_faillock by default. I'm going to make this configurable by the user. But it has come to my mind that once pam_faillock was enabled one might like to switch it back and disable it again by using the same role. I'm not sure what's the best way to do that and would like to get your opinions on this. I've thought about using a variable (bool) to enable/disable pam_faillock and set the state option of the corresponding tasks either to present or absent. In cases where I have to use the command module, due to the lack of other options, I would use a conditional to decide whether the task should run or not. What do you think about it? Do you get what I mean? Is my approach OK or is there a better way of doing it? Looking forward to reading your replies. How to handle roles with dependencies on collections?

Some roles now have dependencies on collections, since with ansible-core some of the plugins are now external to ansible and only available via collections. for background see https://github.com/linux-system-roles/storage/issues/258 The Ansible team regards this as a "not my problem" issue. I was thinking of adding a non-standard file like `meta/collection-requirements.yml` to the roles that need it - at least we could document that users will have to first do ansible-galaxy role install linux-system-roles.storage then use ansible-galaxy collection install -r /path/to/roles/linux-system-roles.storage/meta/collection-requirements.yml Any ideas?

Working with the System Roles Template

Hi, I've used the template at https://github.com/linux-system-roles/template to start working on a system role 'pam_pwd'. Since I started my work there were some commits to the template. Do I have to rebase/merge these changes into my local branch before I could send a PR for my role? Regards, Joerg

GitHub recently enabled Discussions for organizations: https://docs.github.com/en/organizations/managing-organization-settings/ena… Would this be useful for linux-system-roles? If so, I was going to use https://github.com/linux-system-roles/linux-system-roles.github.io/ as the repository.
