I'm unable to use Fedora 27 beta 1.5 in Virtualbox: the screen (inside the VM) become black. I've not spotted this issue in previous composes. Someone is aware of this issue?
Thank you. A.

What image are you trying to use?
I just brought up the KDE-Live image on a VirtualBox VM without issue. I've not installed it yet and probably won't so so until my morning.

I'm using Workstation Live. However, using basic graphics mode, it works.

I've just tried installing rawhide in a Virtual Machine, I get a terminal screen no GUI. Rawhide was installed from the lastest version Fedora-27-20170928.n.0 https://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/compose/branched/Fedora-27-20170928.n.0/compose/Everything/x86_64/iso/Fedora-Everything-netinst-x86_64-27-20170928.n.0.iso

I don't know what you mean by "basic graphics mode". But I confirmed your observation with WS Live. I'm guessing it is trying to start in Wayland and not detecting that it isn't in a Wayland capable environment.

But F26 workstation live works without any issue. Isn't Wayland in use also in the previous versions of Fedora?

OK...

Sure. But this is a new version. So, a change could have been made that is causing this.

In any case I think that it is a bad issue. I can suppose that many people use virtualbox, for instance as a way to try Linux distributions, and shipping a release not booting on it, isn't nice. Saying this I mean that we should better investigate this issue.
Ciao A.

Is this still true? About 2 months ago I was trying wayland out in rawhide
on my virtualbox vm. Ran sluggish as could be but it did run.

Anyone who is able to reproduce this - either connect to such a system via ssh and inspect the journal, or wait a while and then reboot the system and inspect the journal of the previous boot. There should be some error messages in there. Please file a bug against kernel/gdm/gnome-shell/mutter (depending on what's in the logs, these are likely candidates) and post a bugzilla link here. I'll add it to CommonBugs and we'll have a look whether there's something we can fix on the Fedora side.
Thanks.

This is the Live Workstation image that fails to present anything.
I don't think ssh is available and certainly everything is gone when you reboot.
However, I have found that if I boot to multi-user mode by adding 3 to the boot parameters I could then login as "liveuser" and use "startx" to get the GUI.
Do you think there is anything to collect at this point?

You need to install the system first (i.e. in basic graphics mode, or using netinst), enable sshd in the system, and then reproduce it. Or the same approach without ssh but with "journalctl -b -1" to see a journal from a previous boot.
I install the Fedora 27 Live workstation Beta using basic graphics mode on virtualbox, boot on the new installed system and it's work as usuale. So there are an easy workaround for this one.

Nice to know. Btw, I can not be more precise right now, but I had issues even with basic graphics mode, and also with netinstall. In short, maybe my fault, I have not yet been able to install F27 on virtualbox. :-(

Just to be complete , i got the issue if i boot normaly with the Fedora 27 Live Workstation image Beta. Got this issue the first time i try to boot a Fedora 27 Live workstation for a testday that need Workstation (probalbly september 19 th).

Finally I was able to install F27 using netinstall and text interface. I'm able to login in a text console, and to enable ssh. Using startx I'm able to get the GNOME GUI. But, instead of startx, if I issue the command "systemctl start gdm" the virtualbox screen goes black. If I stop gdm (via ssh), I get a core dump. Process 1273 (gnome-shell) of user 42 dumped core. I'm collecting logs in order to file a bug.
Ciao A.

Sorry, but I cannot spot such error anywhere.
However. When GDM is running and I see the black screen, so supposedly there is the user name displayed, then I hit Enter and I type my password, looking at the logs I can see a successful login...
Ciao, A.

As it happens I filed yesterday
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1497866
Only this was from Fedora 25 and without any kind of virtualization in sight.
OTOH I see now that this kind of an error message is now spaming my logs all the time, making them pretty useless in the process, and not always causing drasting consequences, like lockups and segfaults, beyond eating computer resources for nothing.
