off-topic : Adobe reader doesn't show file window

as Adobe Reader cannot be fully replaced by evince or other application, I note that if I start Acroread and I use the File/open menu, it doesn't work. Using acroread name_of_file in a terminal it works. Any idea? sorry for the off-topic Antonio Montagnani Linux Fedora 28 Workstation da/from Gmail

Mate + F28

Folks, shortly after F28 was released I upgraded one of my systems to F28 using fedup. Since that day, despite all the updates I have installed, I still cannot run the MATE desktop on that system. Before the upgrade, when the system ran F27, I ran MATE without any problems. Now as soon as I login I get a screen that is completely messed up :-(. However, if instead of the MATE desktop I select the Gnome Classic desktop, it appears just fine and I can use it. This problem with F28 and MATE does not affect just this one system, I upgraded a second system and created to F28 VMs, one under VirtualBox and one under VMware. Of these 4 F28 systems, the only one that is usable with the MATE desktop is the VM under VirtualBox. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing the problem? As I said this worked fine under F27. I am reluctant to upgrade my 2 primary systems until this issue is resolved. This has to be a Very Dumb Question, but what is the difference between a "display manager" and a "desktop manager"? I'm trying to run MATE on F28, and succeeding to the extent that I do have a more or less MATE-like GUI, but only by grace of still having an F26 rescue kernel. (Two PCs without that kernel are unable to give any GUI at all. All I can do is keep a console open and run dnf upgrade once or twice a day, using an F28 rescue kernel, with reboots whenever any kernel is mentioned.) And this GUI does not afford me the panel applets I use most. In quest of better, I've been experimenting with various apps called *dm. Most do better than lightdm (which I started with), but not yet a whole lot better. Some will say I oughtn't to run Fedora at all, but at this point my accumulated ignorance has reached a level where any other distro would tie me up in even more knots.

Display Manager and applets

Unless I'm more confused than usual, I'm currently running lxdm (set to MATE) on F28. I'm glad to have a display manager that works; but it denies me the two applets I use most. I normally restrict each workspace to a single app, and keep 18 spaces open (mostly with eight or ten in actual use); but the current setup only allows me two workspaces, causing a clutter. Also, eyes in each of four panels are by far the easiest way for my ancient eyeballs to find the mouse cursor; and the current setup has no eyes at all, afaict. portable (non-live) Fedora on an external USB drive

Similar to an earlier thread [portable (really) Fedora on stick], I am trying to create a portable Fedora 27 install on an external USB hard drive. I have done this in the past as recently as Fedora 14, but things have changed since then, and I seem to be hitting some unexpected issues.... The install proceeds as expected, no apparent errors, etc. But then when I go to boot the external drive, it immediately displays "Operation System not found" - Note that is is "Operation", *not* "Operating". Googling, I found suggestions regarding setting boot flags which I have tried to no avail. In the thread mentioned above, there was a step to use dracut to rebuild the initramfs files, which I have done, again to no avail. (This step was done by using the install USB stick, the "troubleshoot" option, and then chroot'ing into /mnt/sysimage). Any suggestions as to what I should try next? Some additional info.... Internal drive has been wiped, and is not bootable. External USB drive is 4TB, and has a GPT partition table using the default layout provided by the installer.

centos7 -- webapp setup

Hi. Looking at deploying test webapps. Be easy! I'm not the sysadmin/devops. I've been looking at different sites/vids to see what's involved with really setting up the OS for the webapp deployment. Selinux appears to play a major role in getting everything "right". Anyone here want to play the role of hired gun for a short convo in how al of this gets setup? Also, given that centos is behind in terms of php/python/etc.. are there "better" OS/platforms to use? Thoughts/comments .. thanks

I am using fedora 28 ，Try to use teamviewer 13 Remote system，But there is no sound，Voice can be heard at the local end。I tried many methods and I can't solve them. I hope I can get help.

Feature request: line break eliminater

Firefox has a feature that (I hope) might well be universal. If I highlight a URL which my mailer (Alpine) breaks into several lines and then paste it in, Ffx takes care of the nonce line breaks, going right to the site. But if I copy that URL (sometimes, as with changing an xfinity password, many seeming lines long) into any other browser, *I* have to eliminate all the line breaks (and sometimes, not always, introduced extraneous characters such as % a/o angle brackets).
