My only comment is to *please* don't choose to use really stupid names like Ubuntu uses.

You mean like "Beefy Miracle?" Seriously, I always thought that Fedora 18's code name should be a celebration of Life. Two brownie points to the first person to figure out why.

You mean apart from the "18 = Chai (Hebrew) = Life (English)" thing? -Don

Give yourself two brownie points. I've mentioned this at least once before, if not twice, and you're the first person to pick up on it.

Or you could go with a type of "code" that only really die-hard Fedora Fans might figure out......like since "B & M" have both been used for 17..(B-eefy M-iracle)..maybe move the two letters over to the right by one and you now have "C & N"....so then you choose names with those letters,.....and when 19 comes around you'd use the "D" and the "O" to name that version and with 20 it'd be "E" and "P"....(C-olossal N-utrino perhaps for this next version?...)

I like the idea of naming Fedora releases after scientists. There is very little closer to the idea of open-source than scientists who have done quality peer-reviewed work and also been open about their ideas and shortcomings. Certainly far more than Beefy Miracle or whatever.....

I love the idea of using scientists, explorers, writers (not just sci-fi), artists...anything really that pushes the boundaries of the human experience...and not just people, Leonidas was a (or several really) ship too.
Also, I would have to say that so far my favourite Fedora artwork is from Verne ;-)

I think with naming we should build marketing-concept art-creativity to the top of it, and after all we are an bleeding edge distro - we should use famous scientists, explorers, writers, inventors. Without those people we could be less onour world, and they are tried - made it. We can represent big respect before them, no matter they are still alive or not. If one of them is alive, would be interesting to make an talk, an invite them to have their message to our users.... and lot more.

Agreed! Whatever be it, let us stick to something and not move with the wind.....Nonsensical names like Beefy Miracle and Spherical Cow add to frivolity and should be discarded at the submission stage.....btw, we should not ignore the orient in the naming too....
Btw, unrelated, but Ubuntu (which I have always disliked, except for their artwork) has degenerated even further....I hear that hibernate is no longer supported in latest releases/updates because it has become too complicated to support.....I do not know if this is true, but if so, I hope very much that F does not go that route.....

It probably will and has been suggested. Hibernate is poorly supported by upstream and has no maintainer. It has data corruption bugs (one of which I ran into quite recently). So for data safety, it is better to never use it.

Absolutely, but stick to it. Though great names or things (perhaps only deceased) would be a good one.
For instance, Higgs being alive, we could use "Boson" -- bet that would be unique in software land....

Over twenty years ago, some SF fans started a new convention, media oriented with a strong bias toward Dr. Who. They named it Gallifrey. As many new conventions do, Gallifrey One went deeply into debt, and the organizers swore that there'd never be a Gallifrey Two until the debt was paid off.
Next year was Gallifrey One, The Sequel. This was followed by Gallifrey One in 3-D, Gallifrey One Goes Fourth and so on. Gallifrey One is now old enough to vote. (Yes, the debt was paid off long ago.) I mention this to show how easy it can be to be clever when you're naming things. BTW, the complete list is in the Wikipedia article if you're either interested or want to see how many of the references you can catch.

It probably will and has been suggested. Hibernate is poorly supported by upstream and has no maintainer. It has data corruption bugs (one of which I ran into quite recently). So for data safety, it is better to never use it.
Not sure what this has to do with naming Fedora releases, but I very much hope that hibernate is not removed, as I use it all the time without problem, and find it extremely useful.
As far as I can see, the suggestion not to support hibernation has more or less been dropped: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=781749 Contrary to the statement that hibernate is poorly supported, there seem to have been a large number of people working on the problem, and there are several claims that it has been resolved.
Also, as far as I can see the only cases of data corruption reported involved the i915 module, so it would seem more logical just to warn users of that module not to hibernate (if the problem has not been resolved, as I believe it has).

Absolutely. It is extremely useful, and removing it makes us look pretty stupid when it is manifestly something that Microsoft et al can do.

You mean like "Beefy Miracle?" Seriously, I always thought that Fedora 18's code name should be a celebration of Life.

Sticking with the stereotype :)
Can we start trimming the responses to the relevant bits please?

Am I the only person who thinks that the whole idea should be dropped? I never, ever, heard anyone refer to Fedora-17 as Fedora Beefy Miracle (if that is indeed the right name).
Why not just say, "It seemed like a good idea at the time. But it obviously has not caught on. Let's forget it."

You are not the only one.... But, the people that do the actual work to produce the releases seem to enjoy the exercise.
I personally don't care and feel it is a waste of time as is discussing changes to the process. But since I'm not part of that group I know my opinion holds no weight.

I've seen a number of people using the code name, both here and on fedoraforum.org. Until F 17, however, the code names were mostly ignored and I, for one, would be just as happy if people went back to ignoring them, especially when the code names are so juvenile.

Who ever said that was the point of a release name? It never really had a purpose that we can now look back on and say it failed. It is just a small thing our community has always done for fun. I find it hard to tell someone else to stop having a little bit of fun even when I might not personally find it fun and think it has little or no value. It isn't any skin off my nose so I say let those who find this fun have their fun.

I kind of like the idea of naming; it says that we're creative. Sure there are some conservative types who think that names are not cool; these people probably don't think much of Tux either. Then there are the creative types, who number just as many, or in our case , more, who think that naming the distributions is a better plan than not; and we probably work better as a group because of it.
Let's not think of it in terms of winning and losing, but of collaboration and support for the betterment of the task at hand - making us better as a team.

Well, here's my 2¢: I think naming is dumb, *because* there is no logical sequence to it--the reader does not know whether the named version is current, last year's, or 2005's. Even one of the other distros, where the names are selected in alphabetical order, like hurricanes, is confusing, since the names are so weird and forgettable. Call me a stick-in-the-mud--you won't be the first--but I'd much prefer month and year for version identifiers, like PCLOS does. That makes the sequence obvious to the most casual of readers.

The naming is in *addition* to the release number. There's no technical problem in giving it a name. Just, perhaps, a logistical problem if people keep referring to names that people are unfamiliar with.

Also, giving a name to the particular release of a distro has a social/emotional character, like giving a name to a newborn child. It is only natural that developers are emotionally attached to their latest "creation", and want to give it a name, a form of personal touch.
People do the same thing for servers, CPU's, automobiles, fishing rods, dogs, cats, hurricanes, etc... It happens all the time, and is a very natural human behavior.
Folks who dislike giving a name to a distro don't need to participate in the naming process. As for criticizing the idea, they should first think if they would be willing to name their newborn son as "Child-25/07/2012-male", or would they prefer to call him "Frank Jr.". ;-)

Likewise for the naming of other things, such as naming computers on the network. I would put a bit of thought into mine, rather than just calling it "server." Windows machines tended to be given hateful names from mythology. ;-) e.g. We called a mail server Pandora, after Pandora's Box, where all the evil in the world supposedly came from. It seemed appropriate at the time, and still does. And I sent one PC back to its owner, who was forever killing it, named Lazarus.
As for criticizing the idea, they should first think if they would be willing to name their newborn son as "Child-25/07/2012-male",
I am not a number... ;-)
(That'll probably go right over the heads of many list members.)

Considering that I referenced it about a month or so ago, I hope not. BTW, I don't know why Number 6 objected so much considering his former experience:
"They've given you a number, And taken 'way your name!"
And while we're on the subject, let's not forget Ralph 124C 41+.

As far as I can see, there's no imminent harm to giving a new release of an OS a name, if anything it gives it an identity, something to associate it with, such as when two developers are talking and one says have you seen the splash screens for "Verne"?....with the two of them BOTH knowing what Fedora 16's "name" is. If someone doesn't think an OS release shouldn't' be named they can just ignore the name and go ahead and call it by whatever makes them happy! Remember Linux is all about "Freedom Of Choice"...whatever you choose to do, (within bounds of course!) is fine!

I have no problems, personally, in naming releases. I'm sure it's much easier for the devs to refer to them by name, especially in conversation. And, for some distros, such as Ubuntu, the userbase tends to use the names, not release number, making the names even more important. My objection to the name for F17 is that it sounds immature, rather as though it had been picked by a thirteen-year-old boy suffering from testosterone overload for the first time. Yes, I understand that it was picked to honor the memory of a well-liked Fedora developer, but that's what it looks like to me.
Names can be a good thing, but an ill-chosen one can be a PR nightmare. I think that the only reason we've not had trouble over Beefy Miracle is the fact that most people who know anything about Fedora tend to ignore the names and those who don't mostly know why it got the name. This time, we got lucky and didn't end up with a metric butload of bad publicity. In the future, I think that some of the more mature devs might want to take a little time to make sure that we use a little common sense and avoid such names.
YMMV, and if it does, please remember that the above is only my opinion and you're free to ignore it if you want.

I don't think it was picked to honor anyone, but if you want to know who the immature testosterone overloaded contributor was you can see who nominated the name Beefy Miracle here:

While I originally felt the way you seem to feel about Beefy Miracle the facts proved both of us wrong. Those who said it would inject fun into the community, be good for marketing, and show we have a sense of humor were right.

If there's anything there to identify the contributor, I didn't see it. No matter. And, I didn't say that it was suggested by a thirteen-year-old boy, but that it sounded like it was. Big difference.

Actually, I wouldn't think it a bad thing for a release named Bernhardt. Why? Because the very first fedora was designed to be part of costume for Sarah Bernhardt in the play Fedora in 1882 and started out strictly as a woman's hat. Later, of course, in the 1920s and 30s, it became popular among politicians and gangsters. I doubt very many people would vote for it, but it'd be a neat thing to suggest.

No worries Joe! I feel that we can *all *contribute something to this great project known as Fedora, so even YOUR opinion counts!...As for myself....I'd like to see the names go in a more "Start Trek / Star Wars / Battlestar Galactica" direction myself......but hey....here's to hoping!...
I don't give a damn what the devs use for names as long as they are *not* like Ubuntu. Constipated Chicken. Four legged Duck. Soon to be dieing fish. Three legged dog. Etc.
I see the Ubuntu users actually using those names. I have "Constipated Chicken" installed and CD won't burn!!! Really? You expect a Linux install named "Constipated Chicken" to burn a CD/DVD!! <sigh>
OHG guys. Neat names or cute names but not stupid, embarrassing names.
I think that depends on your own definitions. I do not find Beefy Miracle neat or cute IMHO.
Bluntly? No insult meant to the devs? Or whomever picked that name.
"Beefy Miracle", IMHO, is the name of the well endowed male actor in a cheap porno video.

I actually like that idea!.....not to mention that the two greatest "wearers" of fedoras in the mid-thirties was Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney.....so maybe Bernhardt Humphrey?....or Humphrey Bernhardt?.....Sarah Cagney? James Humphrey? Bogart Berhnardt? etc.....there's a million different combinations and then when you throw in the "greats"?....Edward G. Robinson......Greta Garbo.....Lauren Bacall.....Marilyn Monroe....etc..etc you could have a whole new genre of names for the next 20 releases!...LoL!

I would have to agree about the names for Ubuntu.....sometimes it can get scary....but I think they have a theme....that the first name and the last name have to have the same letter?...and there's not a lot of things that begin with certain letters...(I mean really people....Oneiric Ocelot?.....wouldn't "only"....."ornery"......."outlandish"......."opposing"....obligated?.....have worked too?...LoL!)

Now, now, I don't think you're much older (if any) than I am, and that just puts you in middle youth. Not even late middle youth. STR for a know prize.

If you're looking for names out of history, there are worse names than The Ruptured Duck. It was, after all, the name of the B25 bomber flown by Lt. Ted W. Lawson in the Doolittle Raid. (FYI, he was the one who wrote the book, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.) Not that I'd expect many people to recognize the the name any more, but you might be surprised at how many Fedora users grew up watching that movie.

Gee Joe. You studied history in school too? :-) No I was not.
I am the child of WWII vets. I know most of the names of the people, the places, and such. And, yes, I knew of The Ruptured Duck.
My grandfather and grandmother worked on the Manhattan project in New Mexico. My mom, before I was born, was a Rosie and worked on airplanes. My dad, before I was born, was wounded and almost died on his way to Germany. My Uncle Cosmo lost a leg in Italy. My Uncle Wayne lost an eye and a hand in France. June 6th, 1944. first wave. My dad's best friend, and our neighbor, almost died in Iwo Jima. he was my friend too. He gave me the dagger that the Japanese solder stabled him with before Harry killed him. I could go on. But I won't.
All I meant was that the name should not, IMHO, be stupid like the ones that Ubuntu picks.

And *ALL* of this is really OT.

Gee Joe. You studied history in school too? :-) No I was not.
Yes, but that's not how I knew the name. I'm an early boomer (and my sister is a late war-baby) and back in the '50s, that movie was on TV fairly frequently, along with a large number of other old movies.

So am I. Both of my parents worked for Lockheed until Dad was drafted. (Limited service because he was blind in his left eye.) In fact, he told me once that he worked on the prototype for one of the models of the P38. Not that any of this is Fedora related, but it might explain a bit about where I'm coming from and why my opinions about software don't match some of the younger members of the list.

Oh, I would love this name! Vote for it! Aside of this... I didn't knew that about Fedora and Sara Bernhardt. I always wondered for the very origin of the word "Fedora"?
So did I, so I looked it up in Wikipedia instead of just wondering. HTH, HAND.
Oh, I see. English Wikipedia is more complete than Spanish Wikipedia. I'll remember that for the next time.
Thanks!

So then?...are we all agreed?...that when time comes...we'll all vote for "Bernhardt" as a pert of...or the entire name of the next official release of Fedora?....cool!

I would love just "Bernhardt", as in "Verne". Just the name, without any other word.
Cheers Lailah

For Fedora 18 is too late but I think we are on time for Fedora 19. Where and when we can make our proposals for F19 name release?

Since this entire conversation is about if and how to change the process beginning with Fedora 19 there is no answer to your question until a new process is agreed to or the effort is abandoned, neither of which has happened yet.

Leaving one approach, in the meantime: Lots more people suggesting better names, and more people voting for them. Rather than leaving the naming process up to other people, who might pick names you don't like.

I think there's a link somewhere on the homepage for Fedora?....not too sure, but I'll be searching high and low for it, as I would LOVE to have had SOME "involvement" in the next version of Fedora...."The Greatest OS On Earth"...LoL!

I agree! As long as there remains an interest in the naming convention, then the general public can still have a say in this!
