Hi.
I have been trying to get my mic work with Skype and Fedora 9. Skype only works when the device in "Sound In" is set to "ICH6,0", not the "Default Device (default)". The test call works, but I cannot hear my voice.
The default (System-> preferences-> Hardware-> sound-> Sound Capture) is set to ALSA. The default mixer is "Intel ICH6 (Alsa mixer)".
I tried to use the "Sound Recorder" tool to see if the mic was working, but when I try to use, the file is saved, but again no sound.
I think the problem could be in permission to the device. Which one? /dev/dsp?
Thanks
Marcelo

Since changing out my motherboard, I've got everything working now except my microphone which uses my new sound card. I do have sound, but no microphone. lspci shows this. 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia What can I do to get it working? Any ideas? Also I'm using Pulseaudio by default in Fedora 9 64-bit

Don't know anything about Skype. Have read there are some problems in passing.

I don't think so. This is for OSS.
Thanks
Marcelo
Bring up alsamixer (either at a command line or via the menu) and hit F4. You should see the capture screen. Turn on the mic and boost and give the mic some volume. That should give you capture sound.

Don't know if this will work with pulse, but bring up alsamixer on the command line or via the menu. Hit F4 to get to the recording menu. Enable capture and boost, turn up the mic volume. Should work.
Hi.
I don't know what solved the problem, but I included the +20dB bust and "microphone capture" options. And also, after I could see the input device option in PulseAudio Volume Control.
Thanks

I dunno about you, but all us engineers want to know what the zero dB reference level is for busts. Must have been pretty big to lose the microphone in them... ;-)
Hi! I've been trying and trying to put my mic to work with FC8, but still didn't reach any success... The sound output seems to be working fine, as I am able to hear it from the apps I've tried so far, including Skype! But still no success at all with recording in Skype, Audacity or console arecord... After getting through several similar issues on the web, I am almost quitting, but something here called my attention: the usage of alsamixer (console version), as I was supposed to see mic and boost when capture was selected, but I am not seeing nothing! Maybe you guys, with much more experience than me, could give me some hints on how to go a bit further in order to cast this problem out, for which I thank you in anticipation. By the way, the sound-card is an Intel built-in... Again, thanks João

did you gave a look in preferences of alsamixer if Microphone is de/selected???
Hello Antonio, Thanks for the feedback, first of all... The answer is yes, I've done that in the alsamixer (gui/gnome version), and what I find strange is that I am not able to see the respective information also in the alsamixer console-version! Does this help to go a bit further? Again, thanks :) Joao

You may have to go into Edit --> preferences in the mixer, and check Microphone Capture and Microphone Boost. This will put them in the Switches tab. The microphone setting you are using are sending it to the mixer for the output, and not capturing it for recording.

Hi, Also, many thanks for the feedback! In fact, I've done that before also without success... I've tried again, and I have the following selected in Edit-->Preferences: -Master -PCM -Line-In -Line-In capture -CD -CD capture -Microphone -Microphone capture -Mic Boost (+20db) -Mic select -PC speaker -Capture -External amplifier -High-Pass filter enable
Which enables the following in the switches tab: -Line-In capture [selected] -CD capture [not selected] -Microphone capture [selected] -Mic boost (+20db) [selected] -External amplifier [selected] -High-Pass filter enable [selected]
And also 2 additional tabs: 1st tab is "options", and holds "Mic Select", from which I can try to select Mic1 or Mic2 2n tab is "recording", and holds 2 controls for "capture" volume
Still doesn't work... and I am affraid that there's something really stupid that I am doing/missing without knowing it... as I still find strange that the console version of alsamixer only sees "master" and "capture", and this last without further items (like Mic1, Mic2 or else) to select (which I learned I could do with the space key, after "capture" is previously selected with the tab key).
Well, sorry for this long post, but I tried to cover it all... hoping for some additional hints!
Oh, and by the way, just reminding about the environment: FC8, Intel on-board sound-card, and using an output amplifier from Creative (which shouldn't matter at all...)
Again, thanks Joao

And in recording only Capture Input Source is: Internal Mic
When I start Sound recorder I get the message that capture settings are not correct (But everything is selected and slides are up) And until latest updates in F9 Skype could work, now I have sound in but no way to have sound out.

Funny....as running kernel 2.6.25.14-108.fc9.i686, SKype is working, running kernel-2.6.26.3-29.fc9.i686 Skype has no microphone recording.....I blame kernel for it. Any Idea????
Try this:
for fedora 9
here, pulseaudio comes in...
you don't know if the there is a pulseaudio sound server, nor, if there were, how it can be (re)started.
before you hear your own voice after typing in
cat /dev/dsp > /dev/dsp
and speaking into your PC you just are not ready for skype...
perhaps these two processes should run (?) on your system for sound... 2482 ? Sl 0:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --log-target=syslog 2486 ? S 0:00 /usr/libexec/pulse/gconf-helper
the first one is the pulse-audio-server, which does not come from /usr/sbin... (from where it could be started only by root). the idea behind this is: each user can start his own sound-server on the system, taking input from whatever this user chooses and bringing output to whatever output this user chooses. so, on one hw system, many sound server can be active at the same time.
you must not be root.
if your system uses pulseaudio throughout, you may not need the following alsamixer step, which is for the older also-sound system.
type in alsamixer
if you get the error-message, that probably your sound server is not running, reboot, because you don't know how to (re)start the sound server with the system running. after the system comes up type alsamixer again.
you should see three views: playback, capture, and all. you change between views typing TAB. you go into the capture view. below the pile you should see L and R and below that CAPTUR, and below that you should see the percentage of the pile, and below that you see the <CAPTURE> selector (red on blue ground). give that pile an approp length/percentage. click ESC to exit alsamixer.
now comes again pulseaudio, so do not miss this step:
then - mehr schwieriger jetzt - give the volume-control in the gnome-panel at the very right hand side a right-click, and then select Open Volume Control. The Volume Control ESS Maestro03 PCI (Alsa mixer) windows opens. You may also select this application going through System/Preferences/Hardware/Volume Control.
Here, you must see four tabs: Playback, Recording, Switches, Options. If you see only playback, klick Edit/Preferences and select all sub-applications you consider important.
on the playback tab, master, PCM, and microphone must have an approp pile and must not be muted. on the recording tab, you see the Capture pile, which also must be of approp length, and must not be muted. on the Switches tab, you must select/check Microphone Capture. on the Options tab, you must select Mic1 (we only have one Microphone). Then File/Quit.
and then you must reboot your system, because you don't know, how to (re)start the sound server.
and then you should hear yourself when speaking into your PC with cat /dev/dsp > /dev/dsp
and also the skype ca'' testing service should work.

Clearly if you change only one thing and sound stops working, the kernel *is* to blame for it. But something else my be the fix, if the kernel is changed to tickle a problem elsewhere, although I suspect that the hardware is being detected differently. You might compare the dmesg from boot of each of the kernels and see if that provides useful information.
The very first thing I would suggest is to kill pulseaudio, just using alsa sound and alsamixer has been far easier to get going for input on my systems. My impression is that pulseaudio is trying to do cleaver things without providing clever documentation or user interface. So it works for people who know the secret, and they swear there is no problem, but there seem to be many tricks which you can find only on unofficial web sites, in chat rooms, and the like.
At least you can try the dmesg compare and taking one possible source of the problem out of the picture. See if that helps.

Tnx for the answer, but I will not kill pulseaudio, as I understand that is a new feature of Fedora...of course killing pulseaudio might solve my issue, but not help to improve pulseaudio performances in fedora

I checked my system that is playing by an Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller Playback is fine but I cannot record!!! I have the following slides in Playback: Master PCM Line in boost Mic Boost Beep Internal Mic Boost
And in recording only Capture Input Source is: Internal Mic
When I start Sound recorder I get the message that capture settings are not correct (But everything is selected and slides are up) And until latest updates in F9 Skype could work, now I have sound in but no way to have sound out.

forgot to say that in alsamixer I have only Master and Capture. My Smolt page is: pub_e6353e96-ff90-440d-8c02-30efa9b752f2

And having a non-working system improves it how? If you took out PA and the problem went away you could report it with bugzilla, or verify that it was elsewhere if the problem persisted.
