Hey, I'm new to this list. I was excited about downloading Fedora Core 1 today, only to find out that it was delayed due to 'Respin'? What does that mean? I looked 'respin' up in the dictionary, but didn't fidn anything :p

It means that we found an issue which was serious enough to prevent us from shipping, therefore we are going to have to fix the issue then create new trees and test to verify that the new trees are sane. This whole process is referred to as "spinning a release."

This is the best message I've seen on this list since the group was started. There has been a ton of speculation, guesses, upset people...and now this note.
Jay, your note indicates to me that RH still cares. A Fedora release is being delayed because it isn't ready. Further, you are doing QA testing and not just tossing the release to the public.
I believe this is a real sign to those whose faith may have been shaken and perhaps feel that RedHat might be abandoning the flock!

RH said that the development of Fedora will be a more open process. Then I wonder why they can't tell us what their problem is that causes them to delay? It either is a) something secret, or b) they don't want to waste their time explaining. b would be acceptable but a?!?

If this is Open to the community, like the Debian Project, then there should be a fedora-devel list where there exists discutions about releases, etc.
Those this list exist?
Yes

My guess is it deals with either proprietary licensing or foreign export issues. In turn, that might mean that the test releases have a problem which would certainly cause everyone to be circumspect.

The details were explained in development forums such as IRC. It's really hard to make sure that everyone hears the whole story, and if you're interested in participating in development, you should get onto the developer's mailing list & IRC channel anyways.

Haven't seen it on fedora-devel-list at least...
Could be related to a BXA issue, all I know is they are working on it.
Schedule slip

We had to respin FC1 today for a non-technical issue (that's all I can say, sorry), which resets the clock for release. We have to start over again with the export process, and I don't think they work weekends, so we have to slip until after we hear back from them and then sync to mirrors. Wednesday the 5th is slightly possible, a day later more likely.
We did at least pull in a few technical fixes as well whil we were at it.
Sorry about that,

There's nothing secret about it, go http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2003-October/msg04157.html and read this thread!

the new trees are sane. This whole process is referred to as "spinning a release."
Glad to know I'm not the only one who was puzzled by that notice. It's obvious now that you mention "spinning a release". All morning I've been thinking 'resp-in... resp-in...' what could that mean... DUH... re-spin :-)
Cheers,

Is it possible to know exactly what is preventing the release ? Is it the smartd bug with some USB devices or anything else ?
Thanks.

No, not possible for it was for no technical reason:

If that's the real reason, that's funny :)
