I messed with it some, experimenting with the old SUN java vs the new iced tea (1.7.0).
Firefox refused to see the changes until a reboot. Very odd.
Works fine and verifies after a reboot.

There are some indeterminate issues with icedtea as far as I'm concerned. I couldn't get it to work as a plugin at all. I did get Sun's Java installed and working however (if you want those instructions let me know). The last step of that is to remove nspluginwrapper. That seems to make Sun's plugin work, you might try it.

Well, it worked fine out of the box here. No fuse, no muse.

Or maybe that was "No fuss, no muss". :-)

I'd be interested to hear how you got Sun's Java working, it's eluded me so far.
I tried rebuilding from JPackage nosrc RPMs (with my F7 spec file), but the resultant packages want the XFS font server installed..
I've also tried installing the Sun binary RPM and the -compat RPM from JPackage, the plugin showed up in Firefox, but I never got any applets to start up..
Thanks, Jon.

Hi Jon,
I have been using Sun's JVM for quite some time now (over quite a few releases). First up install the Sun's Java Env. Then, a little lesser known fact is that you need to have compat-stdc++ also installed. Finally, just link /usr/java/jdkx.x.x_xx/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ and then restart firefox.
And oh yeah, I also pathmunge that java path (in /etc/profile).
Thats all that there is to it.
Still downloading Fedora 8. Once I have it installed shall toy around with IcedTea too.

Ah thanks,
I needed the compat-libstdc++-33 libraries and to apply the sed fix from here https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=254144#c14
The libX11 change is a pain though, it also breaks the Citrix client, and haven't found a workaround for that yet.
Regards, Jon.

I've tested this a couple of times on F8rc3 Live. So if there are changes with F8 or differences with the DVD install I don't know yet.
Please let me know how it works. I'm planning on making a web page with instructions and info when I have some :-).
How to get Sun's Java running on F8rc3
As root -
1) Download the Sun Java Linux RPM from java.sun.com and install it.
2) Fix the Xinerama bug with
sed -i 's/XINERAMA/FAKEEXTN/g' /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03//jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so
Save a copy if you want to restore it to original.
3) Put the link to
/usr/java/jdk1.6.0_03/jre/plugin/i386/ns7libjavaplugin_oji.so into
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
4) Install compat-libstdc++-33
5) Remove nspluginwrapper
Now you should be able to compile and run Java applications, run Java Applets in Firefox and load and run Java Web Start programs.
Well, it worked fine out of the box here. No fuse, no muse.
On the 64 bit install I had to make a symbolic link from /etc/alternatives/libjavaplugin.so.x86_64 to /usr/lib64/firefox2.0.0.8/plugins and then it worked.

Doesn't it appear odd that we now have stuff that requires a re-boot?? I never thought I'd see the day. Now Tech Support for Linux will equal "Reboot your machine and call me in the morning!" ala Win3.1

Guys,
Please help. My java is still not working when tested against SUN web site and javatester.org. It says applet not initialized.
I did run mozilla-plugin-config as root. I'm using firefox 32 bit.

I am using x86_64 firefox, about:plugins says that I have the java plugin registered. Both http://www.javatester.org/version.html and http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.jsp says that I have Java 1.7 from Sun, the Sun page also shows the "dancing Duke" but http://analyze.privacy.net/test.asp?RequestCookies=&Requestdate=&ref... thinks otherwise:
*Java Information*
JavaApplets: True JavaEnabled: False
Also, on a totally Java based games site (http://jojatek.hu) the games do not start at all. They say "applet not initialized".

Hi Guys,
Firstly, you need to update the Fedora system. The stock system had some issues with the Java plugin. Not really sure if this had something to do with the nspluginwrapper rpm.
Secondly, when I hit about:plugins in the browser, I see the following:
GCJ Web Browser Plugin 1.4
File name: gcjwebplugin.so The GCJ Web Browser Plugin executes Java applets.
MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled application/x-java-vm IcedTea class,jar Yes application/x-java-applet IcedTea class,jar Yes application/x-java-applet;version=1.1 IcedTea class,jar Yes application/x-java-applet;version=1.1.1 IcedTea class,jar Yes application/x-java-applet;version=1.1.2 IcedTea class,jar Yes ......
Now, I have gone to the following two sites:
http://javatester.org/version.html and, http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
And both of them showed me that I have Java 1.7.0 from Sun Microsystems.
I guess an update and a reboot should do the trick.
Note: This is for a x86 m/c. Not sure if there are any issues with the x86_64 m/cs.
later, Rogue
thanks R
My first impression is that the failure is cpu dependent. I've since reinstalled my system an the problem persists. On another system, everything worked in the stock version of F8.

I have the java applet not initialized problem also and have solved it.
I think there is a conflict between jre java-plugin and IcedTea plugin. so I removed IcedTea and java applet is now working.
1. Download jre-6u1-linux-i586.bin 2. su-->pwd-->mv jre-6u1-linux-i586.bin to /usr/local 3. chmod a+x jre-6u1-linux-i586.bin 4. verify permissions: ls -l 5. ./jre-6u1-linux-i586.bin 6. Do you agree? If you update to the latest selinux-policy and run restorecon -R -v /home it should fix the labeling on the .icedteaplugin which is causing selinux problems. These problems are being caused by the defaulting of allow_unconfined_nsplugin_transition to on.
This is confining the nsplugin to a limited number of directories in your homedir. If you do not want nsplugin confined, you can turn off the boolean by executing
# setsebool -P allow_unconfined_nsplugin_transition 0
