Hello,
I'm running VNC (pre-installed) with FC3. My client/view is on Windows 2000.
To configure VNC I modified /etc/sysconfig/vncservers VNCSERVERS="1:root" VNCSERVERARGS[1]="-geometry 800x600"
And set a password. Then started the service "service vncserver start"
Starts up fine, and I can connect with my viewer to port 5901.
I'm new to Linux, so I'm confused about what desktop I am seeing. I know with VNC server on a windows server, you get the display that the local mouse/keyboard/monitor sees. There's only one desktop.
With FC3, I seem to be getting a new virtual desktop. I guess that would be useful to run X applications. But is there a way to use VNC to display the exact same thing that my locally attached keyboard/mouse/monitor see? So if I change something remotely using VNC, the local monitor also displays my changes. Just as if I was at the console?
Thanks Shane

Thanks Paul. Worked perfectly!
So using this method VNC will start with X, so I don't need to run vncserver anymore right? I can shut that service off? (Unless I also want it to run as a :1 display as well)

Preferences->Remote Desktop
(If you don't see that option, install the "vino" package.)

Bear with me for a minute, this leads up to specific questions... :)
I'm running FC5 with kernel 2.6.18-1.2239.fc5 i686 and would like to get a Creative Webcam Instant working. After much clicking around on the web I've learned that some people have gotten this webcam to work with kernel module spca5xx and that spca5xx has been replaced with gspca. Drilling down the ATrpms website to http://atrpms.net/dist/fc5/gspca/ I've come across a page of "gspcav1" rpms for kernel 2.6.18-1.2239 which seem more or less the same. Does anyone have any insight into which of these packages might work on my systen? Why are there so many gspcav1 for the same kernel?
Thanks for the help! -- Jerry

Simple -- they're all for different variants of the kernel, not for the same kernel at all.

As Matthew says the kmdls are per kernel rpm, e.g. try
echo gspcav1-kmdl-`uname -r`-...`uname -p`.rpm
to get the right name for the package you are using or simply use yum.

Jerry do yourself a favor and use the yum-protectbase plugin if you activate the atrpms repository.
Axel tends to change major packages in the core repo and i think this is nothing you like.

Unless you do like it, which you might, since you're using his packages. A more positive way of putting it is that ATrpms is effectively a Fedora-based distribution in its own right.

I just used the basic tarball, compiled it, after making the config.h fix to the kernel, and fired up kopete and saw myself. A miracle. If you need more help, just email me offlist. Ric
After much fiddling around I still have been unable to get my cheap Creative Webcam Instant working with FC5. It's "same as it ever was" with computers: you either spend more time or spend more money....
Has anybody out there been able to get ANY webcam working with FC5? Are there any webcam drivers in this distro? I'd prefer not to have to use some special kernel that's not part of Fedora.
Thanks for any suggestions! Jerry

I have the Logitech Communicate STX working, but with add-on (open source) gspcav1 driver from http://mxhaard.free.fr/. It was quite finicky about how I plugged which devices into which USB ports on the system, though -- something about bandwidth allocation.

Yeah, it wants the fastest SOB USB port ya have, as it needs it. I prefer to use the above site's tar file as you can have the tar file installed somewhere safe, like /opt, and when you update your kernel you can re-compile it again instead of waiting for someone else to issue a new rpm release for it... which may or may not work for you and your particular circumstances. This method works for me. (tm) Ric

Not just that, but I had to experiment with which *other* ports other things could be plugged into -- somehow either they were shared, or else allocated differently at boot time. Once I got an arrangement that worked, I admit I stopped caring exactly why. :)

I feel ya, just to have something exotic like a webcam working is reward enough, no need to fool with it, leave it alone, don't touch it, refuse kernel updates in yum, count your blessings! Go on to the next problem. <cackles> Ric

The thread you replied to already had the right link for FC5, too:
