Just two years ago, a brave test pilot by the name of Mike Melvill successfully guided SpaceShipOne 62 miles above California, USA, overcoming technical problems that could have proven tragic to become the first civilian to reach space, part of a team effort that won the ANSARI X Prize. A team of civilians working together to accomplish a dream, an unbelievable goal.
Today, we of the Fedora Project send our "test pilot" out into the world, hoping to do the impossible. Improve upon the last release! (:
Fedora Core 6 Test 1 (5.90) Now Available ================================== The Fedora Project announces the first release of the Fedora Core 6 development cycle, available for the i386, x86_64, and ppc/ppc64 architectures, including Intel based Macintosh computers. It is important that we get your help in testing, reporting and suggesting fixes for bugs, and directing the technological improvements we attempt with this release of Fedora Core. Please direct bugs to http://bugzilla.redhat.com, product Fedora Core, Version fc6test1. As always, be sure that your bug is not already fixed by updates and search for existing bugs before filing.
Thanks to all in the Fedora Project Community who have contributed to this release. Your continued efforts are what makes Fedora possible.

Does this mean that i586 machines are supported in Test 1 unlike the stuff leading up to it ? Or should I wait for test 2 i386 ?

?? i386 should run on i586 or have something changed that prevents it from running ?

Currently there are no i586 kernels. The 'i386' reference was to the family of processors vs ppc vs x86-64 vs s390, not the subarch of i386 vs i586 vs i686.

Seems my copy got a bit muddled. Mike Melville was the first civilian to reach space in privately funded and developed space craft, rather than a government funded vessel.

That is correct Alan, as you already knew from earlier conversations.

Well I assumed it was, but then there was nothing to warn people about the test1 CDs so I thought I should check because it seemed unlikely it had been sorted for test1, and even more unlikely that the announce would neglect to mention this detail

It wasn't sorted on purpose, and yes I forgot to mention this little wrinkle.
Perhaps we can get a show of hands of all the people who actually care about Fedora on i586 systems...

just a lurker without resources to participate... but... we don't much care about i586, but support for sparc would be really nice. We have some old e450's (and some others) we'd like to put to use without going back and forth between OS's.... I know it's a pipe dream, but ya gotta have a dream of some kind 8^)

If more people get behind Aurora Linux (Fedora for sparc systems - http://auroralinux.org/) and build a community around it with package maintainers, build systems etc its certainly possible. That's the way a x86_64 release of Fedora was made.

Me. I have no 686 capable legacy ia32 hardware running
Me also. We have a few small K6-2 500MHz Systems that we test some apps on.

I care about it on my VIA C3 (EPIA-M).

Better late than never...
Come check out Aurora Linux (Fedora for SPARC). We're a little behind Fedora (our current release is FC-3 based), but we're picking up steam, and it should work on your E450s.
