It saves time (and CDs) if the most frequent installs take the fewest disks. Frequently it has been the case that the default package selection can be installed using only the first two CDs. A previous post in this thread says that FC5test1 works this way.
However, I added system tools, software development, and x11 software development (but not GNOME development, not KDE development, not legacy software development) to the default list. The installer requested all 5 CDs on x86_64. It looked to me as if at most 1 package was required from both the fourth and the fifth CD-ROM, and it seems to me that such package placement could be improved.

by doing a few network installs from an http server and using the logs to inform the build process.

Yes, it does work that way, just don't unselect any of the default selections else you get an unhandled exception.

I expect some improvements will be made before the release is done given that we only got CD installs working again a week and a half ago ;-)
I'm just glad that the default install only ended up needing two right now :P
