s-c-p picks a driver that doesn't work (but the foomatic/hpijs driver is another choice in the list, and it does work).
The bottom line is use "Brother HL-1440 Foomatic/hpijs [en]". However for more info, read on.
I have a similar problem with a Brother HL-1440 printer. Generally the printer prints blank pages, or pages with a dark line at the top, or pages with a few lines of garbage at the top. Sometimes, the first page of a job is blank, but the remainder prints OK.
Advice on this thread was to select the driver explicitly. This isn't so easy in system-config-printer: if you create a new printer config-printer finds the HL-1440, and fills in the driver for you. However, you can select the printer once it exists, select "Properties" from the popup menu, and change the "Make and Model".
System-config-printer allows a number of drivers for the HL-1440 printer. I tried them all and printed the standard test page. These are my results. Everything was done as "su root", which may just possible have some effect on things:
* Brother HL-1440 Foomatic/gutenprint-ijs-simplified.5.2 [en] -- prints a dark line at the top of the page, which is otherwise blank. * Brother HL-1440 Foomatic/gutenprint-ijs.5.2 [en] -- prints a dark line at the top of the page, which is otherwise blank. * Brother HL-1440 Foomatic/hpijs [en] -- seems to work OK. However be careful to select U.S. letter size paper (if you live in the U.S.) * Brother HL-1440 Foomatic/hl1250 [en] -- failed completely. Message from Cups is "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed". No output from the printer, not even a blank page. * Brother HL-1440 Foomatic/lj4dith [en] -- prints two pages. First has garbage at the top, second left upper corner of what looks like the test page printed at twice normal scale. * Brother HL-1440 Foomatic/ljet4 [en] -- similar to the last but with dirty streaks running out from the left side of the page.
I like the Gutenprint drivers in general, so it would be nice to have a working Gutenprint for the HL-1440, as there was in F-10.
