hi all,
my new hp elitedesktop loaded w F32 is randomly freezing.
not finding log errors, what is the community's debug guidance??

No log errors suggests kernel / OS freeze, which to me says that it isn't an application problem, but something that affects integrity of the system. Power fluctuations? Memory issues?
Are you running nvidia graphics with nouveau? Because nvidia doesn't publish the api of their graphics cards, the open source driver is reverse engineered, and can have subtle instabilities that lead to occasional freezes like this. I used to see them when I ran nvidia graphics and nouveau. They usually resulted from a null pointer being used by the kernel.

afaik know power isnt a problem, but on posting did suggest that.
the 32 GB memory is new.

sadly i am. what is a solidly supported nvidia alternative? geforce 730
this nvidia is my number 1 candidate so far...

I think the usual solution to this is to go to rpmfusion.org and install the proprietary binary blob from nvidia for your generation of device, and also akmod so the drivers get rebuilt with each new kernel. I recall that there is a set of instructions on their site for how to do this.

Note that if your machine boots in UEFI and you use the rpmfusion binaries, you will have to either turn off UEFI, or learn how to sign the binaries yourself. There may be a way to tell the kernel to go ahead and load the unsigned binaries, but I wasn't able to figure that out, and I did find how to sign the binaries.

It's not UEFI that you turn off, it's secure boot. And there's no way to tell the kernel to load unsigned modules if secure boot is turned on.

So far my gt730 with gddr5 seems to work just fine with the nvidia driver, so that should be solid. I think I am 2-3 kernels back from the most recent. Mine is the version from rpmfusion. I don't believe I ran the open source driver for very long.
32gb is enough that you should not have any issues with swapping.
I have not had a lot of luck getting crash dumps to work on my crashing machine, but if it is a real hardware crash often they just reset at the bios level and they don't crash dump.
ctrl-alt-f[1/2/3/4/5] will get you from graphics to virt console assuming it is not dead.
when it crashes does it stay locked up? if it does switch to a text console after you logout and the kernel crash message may still be on the screen in the morning.

RPMFUSION lags behind the pace of kernels. Check to see if they have the one for the kernel you are wanting to use. NVIDIA also lags but lately there have been patches for their proprietary drivers for new kernel series before RPMFUSION does the upgrade.

Not true.
Usually, with rpmfusion, a new kernel will trigger a build of matching driver modules on your machine.

If you do web browsing then there is a pretty good chance you are swapping and that is causing the freezing.
How much ram do you have?
Does it recover from the freezing?
If you have a 2nd device, ssh into the first device and run "top" and leave it running, if the device starts paging top will clearly show the paging, if the device actually kernel crashes then it will be of less use.

nno, but i'll try th ssh, but pretty sure its dead
how do you setup virtual consoles in this release?

Was it ever working or is this a newly installed system? If it had been working, I'd try rebooting to an older kernel.

I don't know the equivalent for that card, but the AMD cards seem to have lower cost for equivalent performance. Check the benchmarking sites for details. However, unless you're playing recent high-end games, it won't matter much what you get.
Hi,
Jack Craig wrote:
PS: does the list still have a preference for top or bottom posting replies?
Thanks for asking!
Top posting is (still) strongly discouraged. The preference is to reply below the text to which you are replying, while avoiding quoting the entire message and replying at the bottom.
The list guidelines, which are included in the footer of each message -- and were quoted twice in the message I'm replying to ;) -- state (in the "Proper posting style" section¹):
Top posting is replying to a message on "top" of the quoted text of the previous correspondence. This is highly unwanted in mailing lists because it increases the size of the daily digests to be sent out & is highly confusing and incoherent. By default, most email clients use this (includes gmail & hotmail). Please, remove the irrelevant part of the previous communication(in case of more than a single correspondence) and use bottom, interleaved posting.
Do not over-quote by the hierarchy level in the correspondence.
Bottom, interleaved posting is replying to the relevant parts of the previous correspondence just below the block(s) of sentences. For a comment to another block of sentences of the same quoted text, you should move below that relevant block again. Do not reply below the whole of the quoted text. Also remove any irrelevant text.
Please provide URLs to articles wherever possible. Avoid cutting and pasting whole articles especially considering the fact that all may not be interested. Pasting whole articles may also amount to copyright violations, which is not something that this list encourages.
Read the above mentioned pdf file on mailing list guidelines by Shakthi Kannan : http://www.shakthimaan.com/downloads/glv/presentations/mailing-list-etiquett.... The illustrative document should clear all doubts.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I find that avoiding upper- case makes emails considerably harder to read, especially regarding the non-existent word 'i'. I don't want to make an issue of it, just stating a personal opinion.

I suspect that one reason top posting is strongly discouraged is that it correlates strongly with failure to trim. With top post, quite often most of the quotations will be boilerplate that should almost always be removed.
