Hey. pep8 is no longer released upstream and its successor is called pycodestyle.
I plan to retire python-pep8, as tracked in [1], however there are still too many consumers of python3-pep8. On the other hand, python2-pep8 is only buildrequired by:
cachedir - already FTBFS, not dependent upon genbackupdata - already FTBFS, fails to install, not dependent upon ovirt-guest-agent - already FTBFS, not dependent upon outside of subpackages pylast - python2-pylast is not dependent upon python-cliapp - python2-cliapp is required by: cachedir cmdtest - FTBFS, fails to install, required by: cachedir genbackupdata python-larch - FTBFS, not dependent upon outside of subpackages genbackupdata python-larch
Maintainers by package: cachedir mathstuf cmdtest salimma genbackupdata salimma ovirt-guest-agent evilissimo nyoxi pylast peter python-cliapp salimma python-larch salimma
Packages by maintainer: evilissimo ovirt-guest-agent mathstuf cachedir nyoxi ovirt-guest-agent peter pylast salimma cmdtest genbackupdata python-cliapp python-larch
Would you like to take python2-pep8? I'd advice against, please update to Python 3 and/or pycodestyle instead.
This is my attempt to follow [2].

These are all packages from obnam which is now retired/EOL. I think larch and genbackupdata can probably be retired (though maybe others find genbackupdata useful?). cachedir is still useful and uses cliapp. cmdtest *could* be dropped; it is only used for the testing in cachedir (as is pep8), but running the testsuite is nice-to-have.

Talking with Lars Wirzenius, upstream for this stack, he has no interest in Python3 support for this stack (well, explicitly about cachedir; I'm assuming about the others) and would prefer a new maintainer for them if such work were to occur. Should we discuss with other distributions about doing this or just start the retirement process? Note that Lars is the Debian packager, so I imagine we can skip that part.

Whatever works for you. As the Python maintainer I care for 2 things:
- move away from pep8 to pycodestyle - move to Python 3 or retire from Fedora
My e-mail was mostly about the first thing.
If the upstream maintainer as no interest in Python 3 support, I guess we have no interest in cachedir.
Disclaimer: I don't know or use cachedir. However from the first glance, it looks like something that could be reimplemented in a Bash one-liner. Could you please elaborate on its importance to Fedora? Because I don't really see it. I might be missing something.

That's my thought as well.

I use it for tagging and untagging cache directories for by backup tool of choice (restic) to avoid backing up things like my browser cache or other things that don't "matter".
It could probably be replaced with a short script or other small tool. But maintaining Bash code is worse than maintaining Python2 code IMO, so maybe I'll find some time to rewrite it in Python3 using something like click to avoid having to port cliapp and cmdtest as well.

I'll retire this. Upstream doesn't want to deal with Python3 and rather than just removing the testing and dealing with Python2 package deprecation/removal later too, it's easier to just end it now.
