Does this mean that inotify is now in the kernel? And if so, why is inotify so important?

As far as I have figured, because dnotify sucks for directories.
s/ for directories//
dnotify can only watch directories ! Yeah if you want to watch /tmp/mylog you get an event to process each time anything changes in /tmp for example. dnotify_sucks++ the counter is pretty high at that point... that far from being the only issue.

I don't think so, davej is the ultimate person to answer when this will hit us, but I expect it will be in Fedora Core 5, so ...

Because dnotify has an awful lot of shortcoming. inotify support is compiled in but it will fallback to dnotify if inotify not supported by teh kernel.
This release also provide system wide configuration files and the ability to configure the behaviour on a per system type case instead of specific paths, i.e. it allows more generic rules. I will add default system configuration files in further versions of the package, at the moment best is to follow the documentation if you need special tuning:

It will definitly appear in FC5. I'll likely backport 2.6.13 to FC4 a little while after it gets released, and *maybe* to FC3 too.
The big problem I'm facing right now with retrofitting old releases with new kernels is that it breaks various random bits of userspace each time, and its a mad scramble to get updates pushed out. By the time we're on top of the situation, upstream is ready to push out a new release.
Over time, I want to spend *less* time having to worry about the n-2 release, doing only updates for really critical bugs. Rebasing the n-1 release creates more than enough work as it is. We seem to gain almost as many (if not more) new bugs as we close older bugs by rebasing, so it's not a magic bullet.
Cherry picking from ~4000 csets per release to backport to FC3 isn't going to be fun either, so it's likely I'll just backport the latest 2.6.x.y release back to the older kernels.

Hum, I didn't expect to push more gamin updates to FC3, for FC3 my main goal was to fix the last perceived desktop bugs related to dnotify/gamin.

Well, you don't *have* to push an update for FC3 even if inotify does end up in the kernel there. dnotify will continue to work as it always did.

Sure dnotify will still work, but gamin is compiled with inotify support by default even in FC3 so as soon as an inotify kernel ils pushed the inotify back-end will be used (assuming people who updated their kernel package also updated their gamin package with the final updates). I just hope the guinea p^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hbrave people who test inotify on other distros had actually found the main bugs by last month. I expect so, an inotify based solution really can't be worse than a dnotify based one :-)
