Making sure all games are in comps

Hi All, To make sure all games we've worked so hard to package are in comps and thus easy to find by the end user, I've written a small script which checks if every package which has an rpm-group of Amusements/Games is in comps, I've attached the resultiing script. I've put a blacklist in the script to avoid what I believe are false positives. Mainly things like level editors and servers, which do not belong in the comps games group IMHO, maybe we need a game-utilities group? Including Colossus

Colossus is a game written in java that didn't work using gcj, but does appear to work with icedtea. (Though I haven't done very extensive testing yet.) The program is GPL 2 licensed. The game is based on the classic Avalon Hill game Titan that is in the process of being reprinted by Valley Games. The name change should avoid the main potential trademark issue, but Valley Games might still threaten to sue even if they don't have a good case. Some of the artwork is clearly too similar to the original artwork to use. (In particular on legion markers, but at least some alternate colors are provided with artwork that wasn't in the original game.) (Valley Games is redoing the artwork, but the original creators would still hold copyright on it.) Also the board design has potential copyright issues as well. The masterboard is fairly unique and the interconnections of the various terrain types may be copyrightable even if the artwork isn't the same as the original board. Also each of the battle boards also has terrain where the actual locations of particular terrain types might be copyrightable even if the artwork is different. The data for the maps can be changed and does include some variants, so it might be possible to ship the game with only some varient data and let people grab the "standard" maps from sourceforge. I would be willing to try to package the game. (I've done the CLA but haven't packaged anything yet and don't have experience writing spec files from scratch, though I have mnade minor modifications to existing ones.)

yum install <packagename>. Of course that means you need to know the name of the game you want. Errors during livecd buld of games spin

I am building a custom games spin using f8 everything, updates, updates testing (and livna, but nothing should get pulled from there) with uqm added. I am also using a custom temporary file area since there isn't enough space in /tmp. Looking at the build progress process procede I have been seeing some errors. During the installs I will occasionally see error messages about not being able to find 'touch' or 'rm'. I am seeing selinix denials for useradd such as: Nov 23 10:48:47 bruno setroubleshoot: #012 SELinux is preventing useradd (useradd_t) "read write" to <Unknown> (var_log_t).#012 For complete SELinux messages. run sealert -l 18ea1527-9c75-4ed2-ba93-a18db2f3c9f4 I suspect I'll still get something reasonable when it finishes, but though I should mention the problems. (Though this may be more of a livecd issue, than one specific to the games spin.)

Is the sample kickstart file up to date?

Is they sample kickstart file on http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Games/GamesLive up to date? Can I add other games (say from the wishlist that are in the repo) by just adding the package names to the kickstart file? I was thinking of trying to make a new one for myself (and maybe family) this weekend using current updates (and updates testing as there is a fix for a problem with my video card available there), but I wanted to add in at least uqm.

So, if you are frustrated about Ultimate Stunts being chunky on your Radeon 9200 or 9250, try these settings, which almost double the framerate on my Radeon 9200 SE (from around 7 to around 12 fps), making it tolerable: #Maximum texture size #value <= 4: no texture texture_maxsize = 128 #Background texture size #value <= 4: no background background_size = 128 #Shadow map texture size #value <= 4: no shadow shadow_size = 64 #Reflection map texture size #value <= 4: no reflection (NYI, use reflectiondist = 0.0 instead!) reflection_size = 64 Kevin Kofler

Urban Terror

Hi, Urban Terror is a popular total conversion/mod based on the Quake 3 engine. It is a realistic style game similar to Counter Strike. Works well already with the Quake 3 engine available in the repository. Instructions ------------ # yum install quake3 # wget ftp://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/games/urbanterror/UrbanTerror40_full.zip (536 MB) # unzip UrbanTerror40_full.zip # su # mv q3ut4/ /usr/share/quake3 # exit # quake3 +set fs_game q3ut4 Trying to run it from the mod menu will fail with a "hunk alloc" error. So don't bother. Let me know if it works for you. Packaging --------- It doesn't allow redistribution. The readme has this gem. "Urban Terror is distributed free over the Internet and is covered by the Quake 3 SDK licence agreement [EULA]. The mod files may not be sold [in any form] or distributed on physical media unless with permission from iD Software. For further information on legal use of programs derived from Quake 3 source code, please contact their respective authors. " While it may indeed be possible to secure redistribution rights from id since they are a very Linux friendly company, we could do something to make this easier meanwhile. Create a package called urbanterror which depends on the quake3 package and uses autodownloader to download the game data, create a menu entry which calls the above command. Should be pretty easy to do. Anyone interested? Rahul

Hi, So I was reading down the list of games in the kickstart file -- http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Games/GamesLive -- and I was shocked, *SHOCKED* I tell you, not to find "gweled" listed there :) gweled is a bejeweled falling blocks clone, and one of the few addictive games I bother reinstalling. (I dare you to get the catchy music theme out of your head) Thanks, Jason
