Hi everyone, Since I was volunteering at FUDCon APAC 2015 held at Pune and got a chance to interact with a lot of folks from Fedora community, just thought of sharing my recent blog[1] about GHC with everyone. This might not have anything to do with fedora but surely might bring some light to the thought of increasing women participation/contribution in the community. Moreover to make it relevant to the fedora lists, I shared my experience at FUDCon APAC 2015 here[2] and thus sharing that one as well. FAD Singapore 2015 - day 1

Hello, I'm attending FAD Singapore 2015 this weekend. The agenda for this meeting was to brainstorm and figure out various ways in which we could spread 'Fedora' across the APAC region. And second was to plan annual(FY 16-17) budget for the region. We began the day early with a round of introductions and jumped right to the agenda of finding ways to spread the Fedora community. Naturally, the first question asked was - What do we currently do towards it? What is it that isn't working? Each participant was asked to narrate their experiences. The answers were usual, we conduct events, use Fedora to teach Linux, distribute swags/DVDs etc. Yet, somehow it's not enough to drive up the conversion rate of the audience turning into Fedora users and/or contributors. It is observed that DVDs get varied responses across regions. In Singapore nobody wants to have DVDs, because they prefer USB media; Whereas in other regions DVDs get over within hours at an event. We need to capitalise both ways; We could not choose one over the other. The issue of wastage of DVD media and resources was also raised. It is observed that we don't plan and order for the media well ahead in time. We do mass productions hoping that those will get distributed, but they mostly remain with the volunteers and before long they become stale, as the next Fedora release comes out. Though we'd prefer to produce all swag & DVDs in one location to maintain consistent quality, if we are to produce media on demand basis, it might be feasible to produce them locally considering the shipping expenses and time taken for it. Secondly, volunteers must plan at least 4-6 months in advance for this to work out well. It is ambassadors' task to drive home that point to the volunteers. Next was the topic of Fedora adoption. Many observations came about. Like the activities we do are not regular and recurring. They are not catering to the target audiences, ex. running same old 'How to become package maintainer' tracks etc. May be that should not be a beginner level introductory track. There is rarely a follow-up with the audiences after the event is over. Many participants shared that they often manage to get the audience started with Fedora tasks, but after the initial excitement, they rarely ping back. Thus the regular follow-up are needed and it is the event owner's task to do the follow-ups or ensure that it happens via other volunteers. While doing events, we also need to aim towards getting more users and not just the contributors. We need to ensure that they know how to use Fedora for the tasks that they want to do ex. Designing, authoring and publishing, Administration, Gaming, Programming, etc. Ie we need to have focused events considering the audience's interests. To increase user base, it's also important to make Fedora more easily accessible. It is general observation that people identify Linux with Ubuntu, but with Fedora not so much. It'll help to have install fests at the release parties wherein we do the installation by setting up local/portable Fedora mirrors. The discussion continued even through the lunch break, and post that we moved on to discuss the yearly events and budget planning. Hello all, Day-2 of the FAD today was mostly dedicated to more brainstorming about various issues that are faced across APAC region. Ex missing leadership, lack of awareness,lack of initiative, divided regional approach etc. Day started with an issue of delays in reimbursements. And if it would make sense to have another Fedora credit card older in the region. Izhar Firdaus, who is an Ambassador in Malaysia and does reimbursements for the APAC, explained various processes that he has to follow around reimbursements, filing monthly expenses and required paperwork etc. It'd be preferred to have another card holder in India, but we need a suitable responsible volunteer who is willing to do that. We'd reach out to the Fedora Council with a request once we have such a candidate in sight. Next each participant was asked what they could do to improve community participation in their region. Each region has ambassadors who have been inactive for years. Many cases are they became ambassador when they were students, and since then have been occupied with their jobs or have lost interest in working for Fedora. But there is nothing much that could be done about it. We can prod them and wake them up, but beyond that it's their choice. Once again the DVDs production issue came about, in that, it'll help to have Alternative Desktop DVDs, wherein user can choose from a desktop of his/her choice than having just Gnome shell. Also for conferences like 'conf.kde.in', it'll help to distribute KDE desktop DVDs than the Gnome ones. User interface could come in the way of Fedora adoption, we need to experiment with the available options to see which one works the best. Next came the missing leadership across APAC region. It is observed that there is no targeted/planned approach to our activities. It's very ad-hoc and mostly happens at the 11'th hour. Like organisation of this FAD, or producing DVDs/Banners/swag when there is a pressing requirement etc. It is ambassadors' task to take control of it. They need to fill the leadership positions through initiative. But the major problem is that not all ambassadors know their responsibilities well. It's their mentors' failure in mentoring them and is upto them to fix it. -> https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors There are other issues like, not all Fedora participants are vocal across various Fedora channels, mailing lists, etc. Maybe because they don't care or maybe because there is a feeling that they can not change anything. It is extremely important that we voice our opinions/views across all channels. Another bigger issue is ambassadors don't have a convincing argument for the audience about - why they should use Fedora. Because in many environments it doesn't matter which distribution they use. By this time we were close to the evening, next topic was about the new governing structure proposed by the Fedora council. DVD distribution and their impact

There is the other aspect of enabling individuals who may otherwise not have the bandwidth to download the distirbution and try it themselves. The freemedia program tries to reach out to such people, but like you, I am not very convinced about its utility in attracting long term users or contributors. That said, there seems to be quite a bit of interest in DVDs (from conference attendees and consequently, ambassadors) regardless of our apprehensions and that says something even though we don't quite know what. I don't think DVD production is that big a cost that we need to put so much thought into potentially replacing it with something else. If there's an alternative that needs evaluation (like a device that allows people to plug USB sticks in and copy a bootable distribution copy, that sounds like a nice engineering project), we should bring it up first, try it and then decide if DVD production is putting cost pressure on that alternative.
