RFC: Location for Player config files

Hi all. I have integrated Rich's modifications to upgrade the Player package to 3.0.0. I ran into a problem I'd like to discuss here. Toby, please have a look as you might give some insight as upstream developer. By default the config files are now installed to /usr/share/player/config. For Player 2.1.0 the configs were installed to /etc/player/config, which seems more reasonable. What is the reasoning for moving them? Since this are regular config files which might be modified I see no reason to put them in /usr/share. The Linux FHS states that /usr/share is for "all read-only architecture independent data files" (cf. http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html#PURPOSE26). It seems that this does not apply to the config files. What do you think? The on-line structure of this high-quality event will allow academic professionals and industry participants to contribute their work and attend world-class technical presentations based on rigorously refereed submissions, live, without the need for investing significant travel funds or time out of the office. The concept and format of CISSE is ground-breaking. Reviving Robotics SIG

Hi all. It's been about a year since we last coordinated and met on IRC. Many of us went off at that time for other work (myself for thesis and exams). I'd like to revive the Robotics SIG again, and I hope you can also contribute some time and effort. I'm quite happy to announce that we have finally released the Fawkes Robot Software Framework which we use on all of our robots. The website is at http://www.fawkesrobotics.org. I'm currently working on making it ready for inclusion in Fedora. This brings several components e.g. Player does not provide, most importantly a behavior engine, a scripting environment that allows you to "just make the robot do something" in the simulation environment, something that can become an important part of a demo LiveCD. Other major pieces of software we introduced (or wanted to) as Robotics SIG are the Player and Stage packages. Player is in there, but is waiting for a major upgrade. The Stage review stalled and was closed, the Gazebo review never posted. Fortunately I was contacted recently by someone wanting to jump on the Player/Stage train. So I would like to coordinate with everybody interested in the Robotics SIG on how to go forward from here. Some things to consider: - Learn about and integrate new people, there have been quite a few new subscriptions to the mailing list, so I hope for more work force :-) - Player/Stage/Gazebo packaging - Fawkes inclusion and small "robotics game" to develop to get the user easily involved in a simulation environment - RoboCup Soccer Server demo apps (maybe available already?) - New software packages to include - Finally prepare for a LiveCD containing all the robot software with an easy to use simulation environment, especially as teaser - Documentation to get people started with robotics (and the LiveCD) - Toby Collet's distro coordination request If we have enough interested people we might propose this as a feature for F-13? So I think we should discuss a bit and eventually meet on IRC within the next two weeks or so. I'm pretty open on work days, what about you? Updated player packages

Hi all, I've been talking to Tim about getting the latest versions of Player, Stage, and Gazebo in the Fedora repos. After much work, I was finally able to get a .spec file put together for Player-3.0.0. I've uploaded my .spec and SRPM to http://www.richmattes.com/rpms You can try them out, they should build and install just fine. If they're up to snuff, you can feel free to use them as a basis for a Player 3.0 release on Fedora. When player transitioned to CMake, they hard-coded the library install path as $prefix/lib in several places. I had add some logic to determine whether Cmake was running on x86_64 or ppc64, and then replace lib with lib64 if it was. Then i had to go through and find every hard-coded "/lib" and replace it with my new variable. A little annoying, but the result is a version of Player 3.0.0 that builds successfully for dist-f11 on koji. (see the buildlog at http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=1740188) I've also been talking to Tim about becoming a co-maintainer for Player. I contacted the Fedora-Packagers list, and in order to become a co-maintainer I still have to be sponsored. I'm going to submit gearbox 9.07 in the coming weeks in an effort to become sponsored, once I do we can add that to Player's BuildRequires, and then I'll get to work on Stage and Gazebo. I went ahead and added myself and a few things to the Robotics SIG wiki page. I also updated Player's feature matrix at http://playerstage.sourceforge.net/wiki/LinuxRoboticsStudio, but I don't think anyone looks there anymore. Rich Mattes
