Hello friends,
I just wanted to know about your opinion, if we should consider replacing the current 4 CDs of Desktop spins media production with the 1 DVD which contains all 4 spins? Maybe even with F14 ?
( eg. would save money, because of mass production leverage. )

I think ambassadors (and more generally people) can generally produce whatever media they see fit.
So I guess you can, if that's what you want, but I fail to see how this could be a collegial decision, as each regional/local group produces their own media, based on their own budget and needs.
Now if your question is « should the official spin become a DVD with the 4 main desktops ? », then you are on the wrong list to discuss this.
Go see RelEng with your experiment, I'm sure they'll be happy to hear about it. :)
Cheers,

I don't think so. Whatever we distribute needs to be an official "Fedora product", and this decision needs to be mutually by all involved parties: The Spins SIG, Rel-eng and the board (hope I didn't forget somebody).

+1. Once the media is ratified by all other groups, we should seriously consider to ship it. I really like the idea but we cannot decide this on our own.

While I think it would be better if it were an official Fedora product, and I think it is a great idea, I don't think ambassadors need to get approval to do something reasonable. We have distributed re-spins in the past and I don't think anyone has viewed that as a problem as long as it is clear to recipients what they are getting.

I am having a difficult time seeing this happen though. Let's see what they say but rather than going into it looking to get permission let's go into it looking for guidance in making our decision.

It raises an interesting question though, especially for the EMEA region. At least for Europe, DVD drives have been standard in laptops since around 2003, desktops probably a bit later. And, I just checked, a DVD drive dual layer writer even, can be picked up for £11.99. So, now the question is, are DVD drives common in Africa and the Middle East, are they affordable, if not we should stick to a split order of media, however, maybe with reduced CD volume orders, which we mainly ship to Africa and the Middle East, if required. This would probably also allow us to reduce costs on dvd production orders, allowing for a larger media order.
Any thoughts on this ?
I personally would prefer to see a dual layer media as was discussed some time ago. What happened to that alternative ? Did the anaconda folks give any feedback on such an option ?
I might have missed the outcome of the discussions at the time, so I would be grateful for enlightenment.

Tristan

The ambassadors decided to go for the multi-desktop DVD and I had a hard time convincing the board to grant me the trademark approvel (please see fedora-advisory-board list for details). After nearly 3 months of fighting the milti-desktop DVD approved last week in a public board meeting at FUDCON. I am currently working with the media prodiction company to make things happen and expect media to be available in 3 weeks.

Cool. Glad to hear that.
Please refer me to a URL/FAQ if one exists that has all of the details. My question is:
Is the DVD a single OS image that has all of the desktop environments on it and one picks the desired session from the graphical login manager?
OR
Does the DVD contain multiple OS images (one for each included desktop environment/spin) and you pick which one to boot from the bootloader menu of the live media?
I've made my own remix that is like the first question... and it easily fits under 2GB and will only get smaller with compression switch coming in Fedora 15... and I don't see why in the world one would need a dual-layer DVD for that. Also, I think it is important to have downloadable .iso images that people can actually burn... and while dual layer pre-recorded media is fine... only a small percentage of people do dual-layer burning of their own media even though many do have the capability. dual-layer blank media just isn't very popular... or at least that has been my experience in my corner of the United States.

You pick them at the bootloader.

1. Because we want it to be *exactly* like the spins: The same user experience and the same set of applications. 2. Because there is no way to install only one desktop, the install will copy the whole content of the DVD regardless what desktop you select. 3. Because we are doing not only 5 different desktops but also 2 different architectures. 4. Because with the login at the display manager you don't get the full desktop experience. Logging into KDE through GDM is not what we want. Some things like fast user switching or direct shutdown/reboot from the KDE menu won't work.

The individual ISOs will be on the DVD, so you can burn CDs or create USB keys from it.

This media is meant for distribution by the EMEA ambassadors and not for download. It will be downloadable for those who really want it.
You are correct that dual layer burning is not very popular because of the blank media, but all decent burners can read this type of media, even if they cannot burn it.
If you still have questions, please refer to the archives of ambassadors and advisory-board list, all of that has been discussed in great length.
Kind regards, Christoph

Thanks. I thought those were very reasonable answers... and you certainly get my approval... not that you need it. :)

Just a reminder:
MediaBit (the media production company in Munich) has an open Purchase Order from Red Hat for 5000 EUR for media production.
