Hi all,
I discussed with several persons during FOSDEM this year about the possibility to have a Fedora event around FOSDEM week-end, at Brussels of course. Probably one day event.
Why?
In fact, many projects organized some events the Friday or Monday: FreeBSD, CentOS, Buildroot, etc.
FOSDEM is very important in Europe (even in the world) and a lot of contributors come from everywhere to assist or to present conferences and workshops. It is one of the most important moment to meet each other or to work on some subjects.
So, we can use this opportunity to organize something around Fedora with less efforts (because a lot of people already organized their coming, their talks, etc.). And maybe some other people should be interested in coming at Brussels to follow FOSDEM + Fedora event (and not FOSDEM only). In addition to this, we are often too busy during FOSDEM to spend time for Fedora only and see everyone.
What?
From my point of view, this event could have some workshops: translation, documentation, QA, marketing or development. To find some issues, discuss how to improve some processes or tools and working together to improve the content or the product. I guess talks should be done during Flock and FOSDEM.
Maybe you have another point of view about this.
When?
CentOS Dojo (https://wiki.centos.org/Events/Dojo/) took place Friday. Sharing the same date and the location could be nice to simplify the organization and reduce the cost of the event. But CentOS community have to accept this solution of course.
How?
I don't know how the Fedora Project handled the organization of FOSDEM (I didn't have the time this year to help, sorry).
But, I'm living in Belgium now, no so far from Brussels. Next year I will help. I guess we can organize FOSDEM + this kind of event with one team.
Next step?
Before doing that, we need to discuss about it. Sharing ideas, having feedback, etc. Maybe it is a bad idea and it will be forgotten.
If enough people are interested in organizing this event, we will plan it.
Do not hesitate to send your feedback about it, thank you.
Regards,
Charles-Antoine Couret - Renault
Hi,
Fedora generally organizes such events around devconf.cz as we have large number of contributors based in the same city (Brno.) I personally don't even know one contributor based directly in Brussels, yet someone to organize such event, which may be a dealbreaker.

Thank you. I'm +1 to organize an event before (or after) FOSDEM, because a lot of people already attend FOSDEM, and is easier for us having this kind of events to gather all together in one place and have some hands-on meetings, face-to-face conversations etc. In this way, we have the possibility to organize this kind of events/meet-up not only for Flock but also when we have big events where a lot of Fedora contributors are there.
Next step?
Before doing that, we need to discuss about it. Sharing ideas, having feedback, etc. Maybe it is a bad idea and it will be forgotten.

I think this is very possible. What would be great is to brainstorm what an event would look like. Are we talking a social? talks (about what?)? etc.
Let's envision success and plan backwards to get there.
Now is the time to start this conversation a we need to start looking for space ASAP around FOSDEM.

Is the goal for this event to have a chance for existing Fedora Contributors to get work done together (mini-Flock/FAD), or is it about promoting Fedora to new users/potential contributors (ubucon)? While it's possible to do both, that almost always backfires, and leaves both groups dissatisfied, so I would suggest we choose one.

I'm not sure about this, but I'm pretty sure that the people in FOSDEM seemed already busy for other projects and the profile seems too technical to use this kind of event as "user promotion".
In that case, a mini-Flock is more relevant. But someone like Tom could explain the profile of visitor on the Fedora stand to make the good choice?
