Hi folks,
So we still have a few screenshots left for the Games Spin. I was wondering if anyone is interested in helping fill the gaps - we are very close to full coverage.
Here's what we need, please claim a letter if you're interested in helping out!
1) P (11) - (Pachi El Marciano, Emilia Pinball, Pingu, Pioneers, Pipe Night Dreams, Pipe Panic, Planets, Poker 2D, Power Manga, PyChess, PySolFC)
2) R (4) - (Raid 'em, Ri-Li, Rocks 'N Diamonds, Rogue)
3) S (10) - (Scorched 3D, Scorch Went Bonkers, Seahorse Adventures, Shippy, SolarWolf, Sopwith, Stellarium, Stormbaan Coureur, SuperTux, SuperTux Kart)
Some guidelines:
* The images should be 300px x 225 px * The image should include a screenshot and put a logo in it too. * If the game doesn't have a logo, make a simple one for it and put it in the image. * You don't need to run the game to obtain the screenshot. Many of the games have screenshots posted on their homepages that you can use.
Other missing images that I think Hisham is going to cover: Net Panzer Quarry
The upstream on this game is dead so we may drop it from the page:
NetHack: Vulture's Eye and Vulture's Claw
Thanks to everyone for your help so far! We are very close, let's finish this!

I'll will take
2) R (4) - (Raid 'em, Ri-Li, Rocks 'N Diamonds, Rogue)
where should i post the screenshots, and do i include window chrome?

You can attach them in an email to me or throw them anywhere and post the link on list - I'll download them and check them into git.
No window chrome - check out the current page to see how we did 'em:

Right now it's just a flat page, and takes a long time to load. I'd like to design it such that maybe the games could be browsed slide-show style by category. Does anyone have ideas for how we could make the most of these screenshots so they are easier to browse?
Thanks, ~m

I did a few very rough mock ups of an idea i had for this, my idea would be to create a ajax browser for the screen shots. Due to the number of individual pictures it would benefit greatly from the ajax model.
Here you can see a general idea, I have the svg laid on top of a screen shot of the spins site, *be warned* I am an awful speller :) http://fedora.splictionary.com/browser.png
A rough idea of how the full bio of the game would be displayed, other additions would be linking to developer sites and such. http://fedora.splictionary.com/game_bio.png
And for category browsing, I think it would be a great place for the agreed persona to show its gamer side. http://fedora.splictionary.com/category.png
These are very rough cut examples and some of the features (such as star ratings and such) may or may not be beneficial to the games spin site.
Feedback would be very welcomed.

OH MY GOODNESS - MOCKUPS!!! Holy moly, this rocks, thank you for putting these together :)

So looking at this, it seems there's four ways to navigate the games. My gut tells me that may be too many controls - but let's think about how people might be hitting up this site. Here's what I came up with thinking about this a bit:
1) 'I like games! What games are in Fedora? I want to take a look and get a feel for them' - I think this may be the majority case, because if they were seeking Game X they'd search for the upstream site. So we want to enable rapid browsing without a particular goal game in mind.
2) 'Does Fedora have Game X?' I think this may be a less common one but still possible.
3) 'Wow, 127 games. I want to get the few best games and not waste my time on games that are no good.'
Can you think of any other scenarios?
With these in mind I'm thinking:
- Top 10 is very important for #3 so it's a *great* idea for our users. It's good for us as Fedorans too because we wanna show off the best-of-the-best, so it's a win-win.
- Categorical organization is a wonderful idea for #1 because they can get a feel for the type of games by reading the category names and dive deeper only into the ones that best interest them. For these folks too, maybe some spotlight content on particular games would be good. Categories also chunk the very long list of games into smaller, more manageable chunks so it's overall a great solution.
- Case #2 is probably most easily enabled by search. Browsing a directory when you know what you're looking for can be annoying.
So I think if we focus on thinking about how users are going to be going through this site, and those methods above that might best enable them, a couple of things become more clear:
- The alphabetized navigation is less important, because search is easier to use if you know the game you want, and if you don't, category is more fun to look through. If we drop those tabs we lose 5 tabs making the UI much simpler (thus easier to grok!)
- Rather than have the sort by drop down, maybe just have tabs at the top, similar to how we have on the front of spins.fedoraproject.org - by popularity, by alphabetical. Maybe. Or maybe just list them by popularity and provide a search box for people who know what they are looking for?
What do you think?
A rough idea of how the full bio of the game would be displayed, other additions would be linking to developer sites and such. http://fedora.splictionary.com/game_bio.png
This is a great start, the basic layout of large screenshot with details in a column on the side is good. It's a great idea to add the size of the game so folks know how complicated it is. The programming language - probably not as important, the gamers just want the games to work and most probably don't need to know what language it's coded in. I love the idea of having a rating system and reviews. Date added is probably not as important to have - but maybe instead we should have nice descriptions of the games.
And for category browsing, I think it would be a great place for the agreed persona to show its gamer side. http://fedora.splictionary.com/category.png
I love the idea of bringing in the idea of personas here!!! Maybe we can come up with some characters (María's character come to mind :) ) to reflect the personalities behind each of the categories. I went through the list of games and came up with this set of categories, what do you think?
- Adventure/Role-Playing - Board & Card Games - First-Person Shooter - Learning - Platform - Puzzle - Racing & Simulation - Strategy
These are very rough cut examples and some of the features (such as star ratings and such) may or may not be beneficial to the games spin site.
These are a great start James! I'm so excited to see UI mockups here on list :) :) :)

The scenario interesting me the most is 'what games are available in my favorite genre?' which is probably a subcase of 1)
- Categorical organization is a wonderful idea for #1 because they can
get a feel for the type of games by reading the category names and dive deeper only into the ones that best interest them. For these folks too, maybe some spotlight content on particular games would be good. Categories also chunk the very long list of games into smaller, more manageable chunks so it's overall a great solution.
Indeed, this is very important. We should keep in mind a game can be in more than one category, for example if we go with genres as categories, Wensoth would be both in "strategy" and "rpg". We can go instead for tagging and navigate by tags, so the same Wesnoth would be "strategy", "rpg", "fantasy", "turn-based", "single player", "multiplayer", etc.
- The alphabetized navigation is less important, because search is
easier to use if you know the game you want, and if you don't, category is more fun to look through. If we drop those tabs we lose 5 tabs making the UI much simpler (thus easier to grok!)
However, I would like to also provide a flat list with everything in the last, less used tab of the interface.
- Rather than have the sort by drop down, maybe just have tabs at the
top, similar to how we have on the front of spins.fedoraproject.org - by popularity, by alphabetical. Maybe. Or maybe just list them by popularity and provide a search box for people who know what they are looking for?
Have a few of the the best rated games featured on the front page of the spin/the first tab on the interface.
I love the idea of bringing in the idea of personas here!!! Maybe we can come up with some characters (María's character come to mind :) ) to reflect the personalities behind each of the categories. I went through the list of games and came up with this set of categories, what do you think?
- Adventure/Role-Playing
- Board& Card Games
- First-Person Shooter
- Learning
- Platform
- Puzzle
- Racing& Simulation
- Strategy
I wouldn't put together in the same category games as Beneath a Steel Sky and Lost Labyrinth, so make Adventure and Role-Playing into distinct categories. Also, I don't know how many games we have in this genre, but I don't think something like Abuse should be categorised as Platform.

Oh, this is a good idea - I didn't even know about it! So I just tried it out; here it what it provides:
Action Games Adventures Arcade Blocks Games Board Games Card Games Emulators Games for Kids Logic & Puzzles Role Playing Games Simulations Sports Games Tactics & Strategy
Nicu, do these categories make more sense? We can treat them more like tags in implementation so a game can be under more than one category.
Does anybody know how I can look up which games are filtered to go under which categories? Is this only available from the individual rpms for each game? I looked at /etc/xdg/menus/applications-merged/games-categories.menu but no dice it seemed.

If we put them on multiple categories, yes: I am sure a lot of Blocks Games are Logic or Puzzles and part of them are targeted at kids :p

I fear the info is only available in the .desktop files and RPM metadata. Can't we query the package database with one of the web apps?

For this i had a new idea :) I have created another mock up this time focusing on getting a feel for the games in fedora, the idea i had was to use more of a slide show / featured / spot light area at the top of the page to show users straight away what's going on in the games spin, rather than having to navigate to get info. This would also incorporate the top 10, which i have dropped from the browser.

Agreed, when i was making the mock I was thinking it looked busy.

I think you're right, a search box would be far more beneficial that lettered tabs. I also think the method used to catalog spins on the spins.fedoraproject.org page would also suite the games spin as stats and a brief could be presented clearly. It would be much better than a screen shot in a box which wouldn't allow for much writing to be displayed.
Hi James!
I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to give you more feedback on these mockups - FUDCon Toronto has now come and left so I have more time. :) (I owe you an interview too, I haven't forgotten)

Would it be possible to repost or even better, to put it up on the fedoraproject.org wiki? You could create a new page for it off of the http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Design page under our project list.
