Hi Máirín,
well, I really prefer nr. 6 too; by less dense you mean fewer or more evenly distributed on the surface? The problem here is that the sparkles also generate the pattern in the background, so fewer spots mean a darker bg. I'm not sure there is a way to export the sparkles and the background separately, but I'll try that later.

IMHO, the right direction is in the even ones, 6-8-10. Let me know what do you think! :-)
I think I like test6 the best, but maybe less dense sparkles? Is it easy enough to remove the sparkles and maybe we can play with different sparkle configs in Gimp layered on top?

So we discussed this in the meeting today. Sam, I'm waiting on the full render without the sparkles you were working on (I think you said you were rendering to 4k?)
In the meanwhile, I poked around in Gimp and came up with this:
http://i.imgur.com/e7xzyYC.png
It's basically the F22 wallpaper, with a triangular pixelation technique applied in Gimp [1], then some color saturation added plus a vignette.

Sorry, it took hours to render the 4k PNG. I've just uploaded both the raw file and a color-corrected version in GH. [1] Honestly, I think that with no sparkles at all it looks even better.

Nice, but I think it's a bit too contrasty for a default wallpaper.
(Adjusting contrast is pretty easy, however. Just be sure to use the development version of GIMP in a high-bit-depth mode, so you won't lose quality.)
Default wallpapers are supposed to provide something nice to look at, but shouldn't distract from any content on top of the wallpaper.
It looks great but it I think it would look even more awesome if the shading applied in certain areas was removed. just to make the shapes look more complete because it's bleeding out the edges off most of them.

Hey!
Here [1] are three different versions with some contrast/color adjusments – I've tried to check how it looks across different displays, just to make sure it is displayed at the best with different settings. Then I've uploaded two cropped samples with the vignette. [2] I think I prefer A or B, C is a bit too dull.

So tested out each one as the wallpaper on my monitors (I have dual 27 or 28" monitors) and I think the contrast in B is too high, even with the vignette. I poked around with Gimp 2.9 with high precision on (I used 16 bit floating point no gamma correction) and came up with this one. I've been staring at it a while and it doesn't seem too contrasty but I may have been staring at it too long to have a clean opinion. Anyway what I did with this one is take B, turn the contrast down a bit, adjust for the lost saturation in color, and then added a vignette again.

Hey!
Well, on my main monitor [profiled] it looks great right now, on my other one [older and with out-of-the-box settings] in some areas is hard to distinguish the pattern, it seems a bit blurry – but this effect may work too. Maybe adjusting the curves on the midtones could help? But, anyway, apart from contrast, which is fine in yours, the only thing which I'd rather lowering a bit is color saturation, maybe a too bright hue could be a bit disturbing?
About the vignette: maybe a stupid thought, but should we take into account the top black bar so to have the vignette starting from its bottom and not underneath?
Last idiot thing, I've noticed your image is blurred if displayed at 1:1, compared to the original; have you applied any effect or is just jpeg compression? http://i.imgur.com/J0Nx3KR.png [yours left]

Contrast should be very similar, I've just adjusted a bit saturation. I really like them both, if we can now settle on one tomorrow I'll crop it and add the vignette, so to be ready by Monday.
Short recap: we'll do 5:4, 4:3, 16:10, 16:9. Should I also downscale each aspect ratio to "standard" resolutions, or is it enough having it the biggest size possible, and then let it be scaled? I mean, for 4:3 do we need also 1024×768 and 1600×1200 in addition to 4096×3072?

Hi team, Haven't been able to input much. Was robbed at gunpoint at my place a few weeks ago and among the things they stole was the new laptop I was running Fedora 22 on, the only distro I had. Had some ideas I hadn't backed up but I'm trying to recreate. Awesome work on the current version Samuel. Quick question though, Is there anyone working on the artwork for the installation media?

Hey, here [1] you can find three new raw patterns – I know there are still some darker areas around, but imho after contrast adjustment should be less visible than in the older one.
Sorry for the really low res, it takes a while to render it anyway...
What do you think?

Hey Sam, I like the third variant. It looks more flat. Less dark spots. Lighter and flatter look better variant for me. More flat for pattern +1.
Thanks, Alexander.

Hey people!
It took me a while since the old blender scene started behaving strangely at some point, but now I think that this [1] new raw pattern is the best among all the other produced so far, and – compared to the old [2] raw file – it gives us more room for final adjustments too.
What do you think? Can I render the final hi-res PNG?
