Hello everybody,
nobody can say right now when GIMP 2.10 will be released, but the past weeks have seen the first development release which interestingly enough is called 2.9.2. I'm sure you're all fired up for exciting new features like:
- Higher color depths - On-canvas preview for many filters - Higher-quality downscaling - Many new, updated and even experimental tools - And much more, see: http://www.gimp.org/news/2015/11/27/gimp-2-9-2-released/
I've packaged it in COPR, to install it, do this (as root):
dnf copr enable nphilipp/gimp-unstable dnf install gimp-unstable gimp-unstable-help-browser
It comes with a nice drawback, too: In order to coexist with the stable version of GIMP, I had to put it into a separate prefix, /opt/gimp-2.9. That means that to use any packaged 3rd party plugins, you must symlink them from the stable plugin folder /usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins (or /usr/lib/... on 32bit) to where the unstable version finds it, i.e. /opt/gimp-2.9/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins (or .../lib/...).
Have fun with it, and as always with unstable software: save early, save often.
Please add me to Cc if you respond as I'm not subscribed to the list.
Cheers, Nils
Thanks. Is there an easy to symlink because I would like avoid overwriting the already installed plug-ins?
Luya

Almost all my plugins, brushes, etc are in my home folder. How would it be then? The article only mention system installed stuff.
Cheers and thanks, Sylvia
Hi Sylvia,
please put me on Cc in replies, as I don't receive mails from the list, thanks!

it should work by (sym)linking or copying the plug-in files in your "$HOME/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins" to "$HOME/.config/GIMP/2.9/plug-ins".
Cheers, Nils
... and in a similar way for brushes, etc. If you're feeling adventurous, you could symlink the directories themselves (replace the empty "plug-ins", "brushes", ... in $HOME/.config/GIMP/2.9 with symlinks to their counterparts in $HOME/.gimp-2.8.

I don't know about "easy", but this should work:
- in a terminal, cd to the system plugin folder, e.g. /usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins - identify plug-in files not owned by the gimp package (one line):
for i in /usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/*; do srcpkg="$(rpm --qf "%{sourcerpm}" -qf "$i" | sed 's|-[^-]*-[^-]*$||g')"; if [ "$srcpkg" != "gimp" ]; then echo "$i"; fi; done
- then symlink these files to the gimp-unstable plugin directory/opt/gimp-2.9/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/ (or its 32bit equivalent), e.g.:
ln -s /usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/ufraw-gimp /opt/gimp-2.9/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/
The last command will fail if there's a file with that name in the plug-in directory. Of course you can also link these plugins into your private GIMP directory, "$HOME/.config/GIMP/2.9/plug-ins/".
Nils
The method worked and I was able to get plugins on Gimp 2.9. Thank you very much. About the CC in replies, it looks like Gmail on phone managed to override that.
