For the upgrade feature the designers [sensibly] want me to use the default background for the release we're upgrading to. When doing F23->F24 this makes the upgrade UI look like a big boring black square: http://imgur.com/dRY5iL6
Additionally, when upgraded, the darkness makes the GNOME Shell top bar almost disappear visually which really doesn't work at all given the special status it has. Is there any way we can either:
* Lighten up the background we have now so it's less black and soul-consuming * Choose another background we can use for all spins * Just use the existing awesome upstream GNOME artwork for the workstation
We already brand the workstation spin with the fedora background logo on the wallpaper, in GDM, in the control center and in various other places so I'm really confused why we've gone back to the days where we needed to replace the background every cycle for all desktops when we really only have one official workstation product.

I think we can see about lightening up the background slightly, to make the top bar more visible.
Is there someone on the team who can do some iterations for this?

Thanks for taking this on Maria!
Agreeing with Duffy here, unnecessary comments like "soul consuming" are demotivating for designers and should be refrained from. It might be worth noting this in the wiki (will do that).

If Masha doesn't have time to work on this, I'll make the fixes - adjusting brightness is *not* a big deal and is one of the reasons we strive to get the wallpapers out in alpha, so things like this can be picked up on.
It sure would be a whole lot more fun, though, if people could find it in themselves to exhibit some self-control in resisting snarking on other peoples' work. "Soul consuming?"
Emails like this can really make working on Fedora (or anything, really) miserable. If you don't understand why something is so, ASK sincerely, and save the peanut gallery for when you have a better grasp of the context you're entering into. NEVER ASSUME MALICE OR STUPIDITY OR INCOMPETENCE if you don't know why a thing is done a certain way!!
Certainly I expect better from Richard, who I consider a friend. I *know* he's quite acquainted with snarky and unflattering and *unfair* feedback on projects he's poured his time and effort into.
I will touch base with Masha tommorrow. Thank you Luya for passing this on!

I think it's important to have something with a strong Fedora visual identity here. This is, after all, a new _Fedora_ release.
on the wallpaper, in GDM, in the control center and in various other places so I'm really confused why we've gone back to the days where we needed to replace the background every cycle for all desktops when we really only have one official workstation product.
I'll leave the wallpaper issue up to the designers, but I think the update splash graphic is precisely an area where it'd be nice to have a new showcase image every release. Maybe using the wallpaper, or maybe it's a purpose-made image.

nothing new on this complains, comes sometimes from GNOME and sometimes from KDE as well.

I dont remember that days where we had for several releases same artwork. Hopefully we have some time in the upcoming FAD to speak about the ¨wallpaper"situation a bit, there are some problems I see coming up.

Hi Luya,
Masha and I worked on an updated version of the wallpaper. We tested it and it should not have the issues cited in the message anymore.
If anyone wants to test it, download it here: https://github.com/fedoradesign/f24-wallpaper/raw/master/f24_wallpaper_m/sta...
I updated the repo with the new files and the source: https://github.com/fedoradesign/f24-wallpaper/tree/master/f24_wallpaper_m
Can you package it for us?

Hi Mizmo, The newest version of default wallpaper is now packaged. You can test it on https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2016-b5b1c46d5f
The new version looks great! I can discern the top bar much more easily, for whatever it's worth. Nice job!
